When I was growing up, Sundays were for church. Every week we went to Sunday school, then service, and a big breakfast at home that everyone helped make. Soon after I chose which college I was going to attend, I began looking at churches in the area. I tried a few congregations and landed at a place that, I knew from the beginning, I would come to love. I had a previous connection to this church because I knew the senior minister (Hi Geoff!). I love Sunday morning church and I’ll tell ya why…
First, I love family, and I love home. I love things that remind me of home when I’m away, and church is a HUGE source of this. When I’m at Sunday morning church I feel like I’m home, and there’s an enormous sense of comfort in that.
Second, is the traditional nature. I have attended a campus ministry (Chi Alpha, it’s great, check it out!). Their style is modern and we sing new music and talk about problems people our age face. I love this, I just find Sunday mornings a nice contrast and balance to the Monday service on campus. I am an admirer of tradition. I enjoy sitting in a beautiful sanctuary, surrounded by happy families, soaking in the warmth of everything. The older people in church are overjoyed to see young people. There is so much love from them; the smiles each Sunday, and they always remember my name.
Next, communion. Communion is such an opportunity to experience and my church practices this weekly. It’s a great way to remember the sacrifices Jesus made which are so humbling, and recalling this each week is really a blessing. I place a lot of value on that bread and cup.
I also tend to procrastinate, however, on mornings that I get up and go to church, I tend to be more productive the rest of the day. I start off the day on a great note, and I’m inspired to get stuff done. And any excuse to wear a dress, I’m there.
Finally, in the midst of a heap of homework, projects, tests, and approaching deadlines, I don’t make much time to talk to God. I got to church and find myself catching him up on the past week. The time set aside, away from distractions, helps me get on track. I get my head back on right and I am genuinely happier.
Don’t get me wrong, sometimes I choose to sleep in instead. But, when I’m sitting in my pew, I am overwhelmed with grace.
"For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst." Matthew 18:20
