The summer is almost over, and most people are beginning to go back to school in the next two to three weeks. It has flown by so fast and for most people that means they have finished one....two...three (wow you're good) Netflix shows in their free time.
Cut the habit though! Start getting your vocabulary back and get your nose in a book. These are some of the best books of the summer, or of all time. Pick one out, buy it for $9 on Amazon and get going.
1. Harry Potter
You seriously cannot go wrong here. J.K Rowling is a Goddess in all things literature. I have personally been reading all of her books this summer because I missed reading them at some point in my childhood. I think the rest of the world would highly recommend.
2. All the Light We Cannot See
This is probably the most popular book of the summer. Everywhere I go I have seen people reading it. I've just started it and LOVE it! If you like World War II-based books then this one is for you. It is a beautifully written novel that took Anthony Doer ten whole years to write.
3. The Girl on the Train
Another highly recommended book. If you ask any bookseller what book you should be reading right now, they will put this book in your hands. Barnes and Noble describes this book as "the definition of a page-turner, this one will keep you in its grip until the shocking final pages."
4. Modern Romance
Aziz Ansari is a comedic genius and this book is living proof. If you are looking for a good laugh, then pick up a copy of this book right away. He offers up his best (and worst) dating advice and then shows research to back him up. It is a great way to prepare for the many dates you will be going on in the fall..... or maybe just the idea of dates like this will keep you going.
5. Barbara the Slut and Other People
This title explains the book to a tee. Lauren Holmes breaks open the type of people who we have known our whole life and gives them perspective. We see the in's and out's of the lives of people most of us probably hated growing up. It is a fun and different perspective in a book that you should definitely check out, I know I will.
6. A Great and Terrible Beauty
Another magical book, it is often compared in the realms of Harry Potter (I know, gasp!). It tells the story of a young girl who discovers that she has magical powers (sound familiar) as she attends finishing school. Now you may not want to read it because of its similarities to HP but it is SO good! I read it a few years ago and would reread it again.
7. Go Set A Watchman
Now, I do not actually recommend this book. This is the second book Harper Lee wrote and there has been a lot of media attention to it. I loved "To Kill a Mockingbird" and personally want to respect Harper Lee's wishes when she said she did not want it published.
Anyways, this is on here because I do not recommend it and I encourage everyone else to not read it so that Harper Lee's memory will stay in "To Kill a Mockingbird" and not be tarnished by this book that was published by a sketchy publisher looking to make a buck .
I hope that you can pick up one of these books and get to reading this summer, because it is so much better than Netflix. Let yourself be transported to another city, time, and right into someone else's life. Don't be consumed by technology and check out these highly recommended books.
