I was training to do a job where I had license to ask anyone anything and get an answer, where I would be a part of a decision-making process that could fundamentally alter someone else's life — it was important to remember that this didn't make me all-powerful. —Tanya Byron
As a future clinical psychologist, of course I have found this book very interesting and nearly impossible to put down. However, I have also realized that anyone could read this book and gain something from it, whether you are interested in psychology or not.
Let me start by bragging on the author, Tanya Byron. She is a British clinical psychologist and teaches Public Understanding of Science as a professor in the U.K. "The Skeleton Cupboard" is her fifth book, and after reading it, I will definitely be reading her others. She has such a powerful way with words, as a writer and as a psychologist. As a reader, you can really tell how passionate she is about the field as well as the amount of compassion she has for her patients. Each chapter in this book is dedicated to one or more of her patients.
Because I am going into the same field, I have learned a lot about some things that I will experience once I get there. But, now I want to focus on what her readers can learn even if they are not going into the field. For starters, you can truly gain an appreciation for what psychologists do. Some people say it is easy, and it definitely is not. Tanya Byron proves that to you in the very beginning of her book.
You, as a reader, can also realize and understand a little more about just how serious mental illnesses and psychological disorders can truly be. Mental illness is something that if you or someone you are close to does not suffer with, then it does not usually make sense to you, which is completely understandable. It is really hard to make sense of something that is in someone else’s head.
This book is really giving me a new perspective on my future, and it is making me even more excited to go into this field. I highly encourage this book to everyone. You will not regret it!
