Summer is a time to get out and go on adventures, but it's hard to come up with things to do, especially when you don't want to spend a pretty penny to do it. As a college student I know you don't always have the money to go out and do certain things. So, I like to think of different activities that you don't have to pay for and you can do by yourself or with friends. It may seem like there is never anything to do, but there are many recreational pastimes that you can get involved in that can most likely be done in your back yard or a nearby park.
1. Go to the park.
Going to the park can be a solo event or you can make it a group trip. I like to feed the ducks at my local park. The park is also a great place to bring children if you have them, or if you're babysitting. There are multiple things you can do at the park, such as:
A. Read a book.
Sitting outside while reading is the best thing to do early in the summer when it's not too hot yet.

B. Go for a walk or run.
This is a great way to get some exercise while looking at the beautiful scenery around you. If you find it boring, go with someone and play hide and seek, "I Spy," or make a scavenger hunt.
C. Pack a picnic.
You can make snacks with the food in your home and bring it outside for a lovely picnic.

D. Ride your bicycle.
Riding your bike is another great way to exercise, while having fun. If you have kids, try racing with them. Everyone loves a little competition.
E. Bird watching.
My grandma and I used to do this all the time! Make a homemade bird feeder and watch the different kinds of birds that appear.
2. Go swimming.
You could go swimming at a pond or lake near you, or go swimming in your back yard if you have a pool.

3. Make your own Slippin' Slide.
This is super fun if you use a big, old tarp and add soap and water, or wear white and use paints. To add to the fun, position a sprinkler on the side.
4. Go fishing.
This is one of my favorites! If you don't want to buy your bait, dig up your own worms, or catch some crickets and grasshoppers.
5. Volunteer at your local soup kitchen.
This is a great way to get involved in your community and help those around you.
6. Attend a local ball game.
If you're really into sports, this is a great way to watch the sports you love, but in an environment that is surrounded by people who also love sports.
7. Make a masterpiece.
If you happen to have any paints or markers lying around, try making a picture of your house or any landscape. If drawing isn't your thing, write a story, a poem, or a song.

These are just a few activities you can do if you're bored this summer, but don't want to spend money. Some of the best memories that are made are the ones you don't have to put much effort, (or money), into. Have fun and don't forget to bring your friends with you!
