Now that the first snowfall has kick-started the winter weather, what is there to do? For those of us who have the (mis)fortune of living in a state with a frigid winter, it’s sometimes easier to hibernate than to find something entertaining to do. Giving up your favorite spring/summer/fall pastimes will be hard, but having fun outdoors and indoors in the winter months will be easy with these (PG-rated) activities. With these ideas, you’ll be sure to find something fun to do on a snowy day.
1. Make a snowman/snow-woman/snow creature
Pull a "Calvin and Hobbes," and go crazy with your imagination.
2. Watch "Frozen"
You can do this multiple times during winter. Singing along is optional.
3. Have a snowball fight
Get a few friends or family members together for a small-scale snow battle.
4. Go sledding
Steps to go sledding: 1) find a sled or something to sit on; 2) find a large hill; 3) sled down said hill.
5. Go ice skating
With outdoor ice rinks opening (and indoor ice rinks open to the public year-round), it should be easy to find a place to skate. Plus, the only objective is not to fall.
6. Try new recipes
Break out the cookbooks and Pinterest recipes you’ve been meaning to try all year.
7. Snuggle up with a blanket and watch netflix
This really can’t go wrong unless your Internet fails, or your cat sits on your laptop.
8. Escape to somewhere warm
If you want to avoid the icy winds that await you outside your front door, escape to somewhere warm. Getting a tan on a Miami beach will certainly make your snowed-in friends jealous. Posting hundreds of pictures on Facebook, however, is optional.
9. Curl up with a good book
Go to the bookstore or library, and stock up on supplies for the winter.
10. Check out new coffee shops
What better time to try all the coffee shops in your area than during winter? The winter weather will make each steaming cup of over-priced coffee feel like it’s worth it.
11. Go on a winter hike
With proper snow gear, taking a hike in the snow is amazing. Go to your local park, and start walking!
12. Make snow angels
Making snow angels is a free activity that should be at the top of your winter to-do list.
13. Plan a winter trip
Find an awesome destination in your state that looks beautiful in winter, and go there!
14. Start preparing for next semester
OK, no one does this. Preparing for the next semester is probably the last thing on your mind while on vacation, but doing this would be beneficial if we had more motivation.
15. Buy ugly holiday sweaters
There is an art to choosing the perfect ugly sweater to wear over the holidays, so don’t feel discouraged if you don’t find one right away. Your local Goodwill and Salvation Army are great places to check.
16. Ski or snowboard
These classic winter hobbies are great, even if you’re a beginner. Personally, I’ve never skied before, but learning would be fantastic. Take advantage of the snow!
17. Discover a new hobby
With more time spent indoors, you’ll have plenty of time to develop a new talent or skill. Check out this website for ideas.
With the plethora of activities to do in the winter months, being bored just means you aren’t trying hard enough! Embrace the icy weather, and enjoy activities that are only possible at this time of year.
