A Student's Winter Woes

The winter that never was.

A Student's Winter Woes

As the seasons change, we look forward to what comes with that change. When it is so cold, we get sick of winter. When we get so hot in the summer time, we can’t wait for it to start to cool off outside.

That wasn’t the case for winter 2016. March 19 is slowing creeping up on us. With the way winter has been going so far, most of us are wishing for a bit of winter weather to come our way before it ends. Some of us, like myself, aren’t hoping for the change in the season before it is even over.

When you move out of an area that gets some snow during winter to a place that is known for snow, you have high expectations. You expect there to be a storm better than the last, but to locals would be no surprise. You hope to wake up to a new coat of snow in the morning. Breathing in the cold as the snow gets stuck in your hair. Having a random snowball fight on the way to class. Even when it’s not snowing, it brings a feeling of comfort seeing snow on the ground. The feeling you have being able to wear a sweater that you have not been able to in a while. I know that this is what I expected when I started college. The snow and how it captured the area is something that I most looked forward to.

When you roll out of bed in the middle of February still half asleep, you automatically grab your heavy coat. Why do we automatically think this? It is because when you live in the northeast, especially in the mountain areas, February is peak season for the cold and is the kind of weather that is routine. There is no surprise or even a second thought when it randomly starts to flurry when you are walking to class. Or when there is two snow storms within a week or so of each other. This hasn’t been the case this winter so far. This year, instead of heavy coats, we were able to wear our light hoodies or jackets. Those who look forward to being able to relax on the weekends and not having to go too far to ski were out of luck this year.

Students look forward to the second semester more because of the higher chance of snow days. We look forward to wondering if classes are going to get cancelled the next day because of a snow storm. It is even more disappointing when the snow storm that was supposed to be the storm of the year turns out to be just some snow and mostly rain. You hope to wake up in the morning with a foot of snow on the ground, but there are only a few inches of slush on the ground. It leaves a bad taste in your mouth as you go about your day. When rushing from building to building in the 30-degree weather as it is raining, you think to yourself, if this was snow then there would be so much of it! Instead, we were left in a season that could not make up its mind about it being warm or cold. Being bundled up one day and then the next being too warm to wear the same jacket became the norm this season. As a snow lover, this is something that goes through my head on a daily basis in the winter months.

Until next time, winter.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
