Millennial voters, also known as college students, are essential members of society in every election. Very few people vote while thinking of issues that regard anyone other than themselves. If politicians do not get any votes from students, they are unlikely to address student affairs such as student loan rates, educational standards, and admissions policies. Perhaps no one is better qualified than the student demographic to focus on these issues.
In 2008, $44 million millennial voters were able to vote on election day. If each college banded together to represent their beliefs as a diverse community, our elected representatives could better understand students in order to speak accurately for them. They are counting on these votes.
College students make up an important voting alliance in numbers that rival another indispensable voting majority - the baby boomers. Many of our young adults have different beliefs than our older citizens. After all, we are much more open-minded than the elder generations. This will allow young people to truly make a difference with their votes.
Voting not only helps students in college but also outside of it as well. The policies that people advocate will still be enforced four years from now and will affect our future. Soon students will get a degree and have to manage new lifestyles like getting a job, house, and creating a family, which means a whole new set of responsibilities coming to their table. College students specifically need to take their action to the polls considering they will be the most affected demographic by the next president's decisions than any other one. Why allow someone else to administer young students and their opinions on healthcare and business related subjects when soon it will concern them too?
Lastly, many supporters fought for our citizens and their right to vote so why let it go to waste? If students have a chance to express their opinion and help our democracy, then they need to stand up and make a difference using what they believe in. If one's future is not enough for someone to want to vote, they are definitely not going to be able to complain about who ends up being elected as their next president, especially if it was not their first pick.
I do not consider myself to be a political analyst, but I do understand the values that are significant for me and my lifestyle to want to take action. I hope that college students will not pass up the opportunity to empower themselves and get to the voting polls, myself included. We need to expand our minds and come together to share our new ideas to create a better environment for ourselves and those around us.
After all... no one wants our new president to be Donald Trump.
