I've been in college for a bit now and while I'm certainly not an expert on it, I am fairly well-versed in what is available to each student. In the first two weeks of school, there were hundreds of clubs and organizations lining Greene Street. One of the things I regret most about high school is not being more involved. I somewhat fault myself for not having the confidence to join more things. However, I somewhat fault my high school for not having more clubs and organizations that I, personally, was interested in.
The lack of variety in clubs and organizations is nonexistent. There is a club or organization for anyone and everyone on the University of South Carolina. There are organizations for athletics, academics, socializing, activism, community service and creativity. If someone tells you that there isn't a student organization on campus then either they haven't signed into Garnet Gate or they are literally lying. And I understand that not everyone wants to be involved in a club in college. However, I encourage it, especially if you are not from around here. Student organizations and clubs are great places to make new friends because you already know that they have at least one common interest.
As far as I am concerned, I've found the perfect organizations to join. I plan to be a DJ at WUSC. I am a part of The Association of African-American Students, Feminist Collective and Individuals Respecting Identities and Sexualities as well as a few other organizations. The executive boards of each organization have done a great job making me, and others, feel at home all while explaining the purpose, impact and history of their respective organizations. While I do tend to get tired after class, I know that on Tuesdays and Wednesdays I have exciting meetings and lively discussions to look forward to. The most comfortable part about having so many student organizations on campus is knowing that there are actually clubs and organizations geared towards things that I am passionate about.
I am thankful that the University of South Carolina tries their best to make everyone feel included and at home with the plethora of student organizations that exist on this campus. I cannot force people to care about things other than partying or their studies. I cannot force people to be involved in college because we are all adults now and we can make our own decisions. I can, however, encourage that everyone find an organization to join because it's fun to be involved in things that matter to you but also you can meet people that share your same passions.
