The Struggles of Working The Night Shift

As told by Patrick Star

Whether it's a lack of social interaction, caffeine or your circadian rhythm (the body's internal clock) out of whack, there are definitely some reasons that working the night shift is not great. For some, it takes getting used to and they love it, but this is for those that consider getting the overnight shift as a real struggle. While Patrick star doesn't work, here are some of the greatest reasons why working at night is the absolute worst.

1. Your sleep schedule is WRECKED.

If you're like me and finding yourself up all night, you wake up at 3 a.m. and fall asleep at noon the next day. Getting eight hours of sleep a day is not the norm for you, and you usually pass out when you do sleep.

2. Naps are a normal part of your life.

Naps are not just for fun. Your naps don't always take place in the afternoon, but sometimes you'll fall asleep at 9 p.m. and wake up a few hours later to head out to work because your day starts before the sun rises. Also, waking up from a nap when it's pitch-black outside is never fun.

3. Watching the sunrise is not that romantic anymore.

If you're sitting at an office or desk or at work and watching the sun rise while you work your night shift waiting for it to end, it is definitely not as romantic as when other people talk about watching the sun rise.

4. Going out with friends is nearly impossible.

Even though you might get invited to hang out with friends, you can't meet up with them after work if you're working late at night and get off when other people are starting their following day. Also, the nights you're free are the times you finally get to catch up on sleep, and sleep is now more valuable than ever.

5. It takes more than coffee to keep you up.

Getting ready for a work shift after dragging yourself out of the bed means you need more than a cup of coffee. Waking up in the middle of the night requires espresso, energy drinks or caffeine pills to pull yourself through the work shift.

6. After days of crazy sleep schedules, you don't know anything.

After weeks of working night shifts and having a whole different lifestyle, you think yesterday is today, and you can't keep your days straight. Additionally, your lack of sleep and intense desire to sleep makes you question everything.

7. You don't worry about looking good.

Because you work the night shift, looking good isn't a priority because, really, who's going to see you? Also, you never have the time to take showers when you're jumping out of bed right before work.

8. You're not-so-secretly dying on the inside.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
