“Oh, isn’t she sweet,” Trudy thought out loud before deciding on where to go next. “Let’s get home and practice dancing.”
“Alright, mom,” Miles replied before carefully pulling out onto the street again, taking care to notice if any cars were coming or not in their direction. Miles knew where to go from here, so it did not take long before they were home.
“Do you want me to pull in the garage, or do you want to practice doing that yourself?” Trudy questioned.
“I’ll do it, no worries,” Miles replied, pulling slowly into the driveway as he pushed the button on the garage door remote for it to open. Once the door was up, Miles carefully started pulling forward.
“Careful of both mirrors, honey,” Trudy instructed quickly once the car got to that point.
“Yes, mom.” Miles watched as both mirrors were close, but they were not touching the opening in the garage. Miles slowly made his way to the end of the garage, making sure he pulled in enough before putting it in park.
“Perfect, honey! I just know you are going to ace that test.” Miles turned to see his mother smiling at him, and he was glad to have her confidence in him. They exited the car to get into the house, making sure to shut the garage door as it squeaked and groaned on its way down. Once the garage door was shut in the house, they took off their jackets and hung them onto the coat rack next to the door. “Before we start dancing, I’m gonna use the restroom. I’ll be right back.” Trudy shuffled down the hallway, humming a tune as she went. Miles decided to plop down on the couch and think for a little bit. He had been surprised when he saw Wanda in the rain. It felt a little like luck was on his side as all these events keep happening; first, Wanda asks Miles to prom, then he finds her in the rain. One of the important factors for him was Wanda got to meet his mother. Miles did not know Trudy’s work schedule for the week, so he was glad if nothing else, they at least know each other.
“Alright, baby, you ready to learn how to dance?” Trudy asked as she came back from the bathroom, and Miles could faintly hear the toilet flushing.
“Ready as ever, I guess,” Miles huffed as he rose from the couch. His mother turned on some slow music to start, before shuffling him over to the open space in the living room.
“Alright, so you are going to start by giving a bow,” Trudy joked.
“MMMooooommmm,” Miles groaned as he took a step away, not wanting to learn anymore.
“OK, OK, I’m just joking! Now, seriously, first you put your hands around her waist,” Trudy explained as she put Miles hands where they need to be. “And she will put her hands around your neck.” Miles felt his mother’s arms rest on top of his shoulders. “Make little movements with your feet like so.” They started swaying back and forth harmoniously. “There we go! You are starting to dance!”
For the rest of the night, his mother took the time to teach Miles different ways to dance. Miles knew she did not expect perfection, but he was glad to have this moment with her. It allowed for them to bond more, especially since Trudy works so much. Once they were done dancing, they noticed it was just about 10 o’clock.
“Well, I’m tired,” Trudy yawned as she covered her mouth. “I’m gonna go to bed; don’t stay up too late. We’ll practice more driving and dancing throughout the week.”
“Alright, mom, sounds good,” Miles replied as he turned off the boombox. “Have a good night. Love you.”
“You too, son, love you too.” They both made their way to their rooms, and once Miles was in his room, he shut the door. He changed into his pajama pants and flopped down on the soft, cushioned bed. He couldn’t believe all that happened today: between Wanda asking him to prom, his mom teaching him driving, finding Wanda in the rain and his mother teaching him to dance. Despite the unexpectedness, he felt good about today. He couldn’t believe his luck either. As he dosed off, he started thinking more of Wanda and how the match came to be.
