Struggles People Who Suffer From Anxiety and Depression Avoid Talking About

Like Stephen King said, “Monsters are real, and ghosts are real too. They live inside us, and sometimes, they win.”

I've personally never had depression, but that doesn't mean I don't understand it. You do not need to live through an experience to understand it. You can live the same experience and someone and still have no idea what the other person is going through. Depression and anxiety are different for everyone, but over the years I’ve noticed a few things that don’t seem to change. They all suck, but you know a smooth ocean never made a skilled sailor.

1. People don't choose to be depressed and/or have anxiety.

This isn’t a choice you can make. It's not like you have anxiety because you have too many things to worry at school. Those things are tipping points, they push you over an edge you was already standing at. They are both chemical imbalances. Yes, there are things you can do and medications you can take but at the end of the day this isn’t something you choose or anyone would chose.

2. Your brain is the enemy.

Like Stephen King said,

"Monsters are real, and ghosts are real too. They live inside us, and sometimes, they win."

For many having anxiety is like walking around with an overachiever, OCD friend that complains because they got a 99.8% on a test. A little friend you brain all the time constantly playing mind games with you.

3. Telling me to “suck it up” makes me stabby.

Please don’t say “suck it up”. People don't want others telling them to exercise or to meditate. This is as effective as me telling you to go walk it off after you broke your foot.

4. Nobody can fix it right away.

It sucks. You may want to help someone that suffers anxiety or depression and the thing is that it is not like there is a magic cure. There are medications and there are things that you can do that will help mitigate anxiety, but they won’t magically fix it. There's no magic happy pill that will make your life perfect. There’s nothing anyone can say or do that is going to fix some brains. It is a long process that takes time. When you get a bruise or even a pimple is not like it disappears in one day, so don't expect anxiety or depression to go away in one day.

5. It sucks for the person dealing with the person who deals with anxiety or depression.

I’ve been on the other end of things and not being able to help someone I love when they’re in the middle of a depressive or anxiety episode sucks. Just know that there is nothing you can say or do that will make them reason, and this reality is very hard.

6. Relying on a pill sucks.

Yeah, just imagine the thought that you rely on a such a little thing. Without that, you can't be normal. How does it make you feel relying on something smaller than a centimeter to have a normal life, when everything you want to do is have a normal life.

So don't hate what you don't understand.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
