Finally, school is out and summer is officially in session! The weight of homework, finals, and fending for food is officially over for a few weeks. Being a college student comes with a multitude of transitions, from moving into your first dorm as a Freshman to your very own apartment. With these transitions, it's easy to get lost in the endless freedom and independence knowing that your schedule is entirely focused on only you. With each transition, it's safe to say that some of us really do love coming home on our breaks from school.
Moving back home for breaks means not having to cook every meal yourself, catching up with people you haven't seen in almost a year, and basking in the sunshine; however, most of us know that although there are endless pros to coming home, we all struggle with a couple cons. Here's a few of the conflicts you may run into while coming back home.
1. "Oh look who's finally awake."
Being away at college means waking up for classes and sleeping the rest of the day away. It's only acceptable that when you get back home you go into hibernation. Trying to catch up on sleep isn't as easy as it looks and most of our parents don't understand how exhausting being in college can be.
2. "Mom, there's no food."
Although coming back home means not having to worry about what to cook for dinner, it's a struggle to find food you'll actually want to eat. Your parents won't understand the importance of having two flavors of waffles for breakfast or the smoothie diet you're hooked on at the moment.
3. "Who? What? When? Where?"
Being away at school gives you the ability to do as you please without having anyone to report back to besides your roommates to make sure everyone's still alive. Moving back in with your parents means being prepared for the drilling interrogations you'll face when letting them know you're going out. "Who's going to be there? Who's driving? What's the address? And when will you be back?"
4. "The dishes aren't going to wash themselves."
So you may become a bit dependent again when moving back home for break. You get into your own groove when you're away. Cleaning your clothes when they're absolutely needed and washing the dishes when you have time because in all honesty, you barely touch your plates.
5. "I have no friends."
Being in college allows you to open your bedroom door and have your best friend already there making coffee or waking you up. You either live with the greatest people you've met while being away, or they live five minutes from you. Either way, coming back home brings the struggle of driving half an hour through traffic to meet up with anyone.
6. Reality hits HARD.
Knowing you've completed yet another year of schooling just rubs it in how quickly adulthood is approaching. I still look like a child, why do I need to find a job and start paying for bills?
7. Home doesn't quite feel like home.
If you're like me, you came home to half of your bedroom being thrown away and all the family gossip you weren't told finally surfacing. It's the epitome of F.O.M.O. and it's hard to not feel a little excluded as you've missed a good chunk of time being away.
8. Time to spring clean.
Honestly, you're probably amazed at how much stuff has accumulated over the last year being over there. Having to clean out items you no longer need becomes the ultimate struggle.
9. Unpack and Repack.
You get home from college, enjoy a few days of seeing everyone again before you finally decide to unpack all that you brought home. You dread unpacking everything you stuffed into your tiny college room only to have to repack it within a month.
10. The excitement to head back to the best University.
No struggle beats the anticipation of going back to college and reuniting with your best friends. Although you love being home for college and spending time with your family and friends, it's hard to adjust.
Overall, coming home isn't the easiest transition for a college student to make. It's like our whole world is being flipped upside down, but it's definitely the most rewarding. When you're moved in to your new apartment and about to start classes again, you'll remember why coming home for break was the best decision you could've made.
