There are so many things that we, as students, face in this world. The immense pressure to succeed and prosper weigh heavy on our heads and the road to get there is no walk in the park. What is our biggest fear as students? Not only do we worry about the reality of tuition fees and essential loans, our biggest fear has to be what is that last test of the semester, finals. Finals are the last exams of the semester that's purpose is to sum up around three months of material for one class and will make or break your GPA. It is by far the most dreaded time for any academic establishment.
Finals week is the most complained about time throughout any semester. As students, we often find ourselves looking for ways to cope with finals. Stress becomes a major part of a student's life and it becomes hard to function and concentrate after all the excessive studying and last minute preparation. Students will find themselves up for hours on end, missing meals and sleep to guarantee a passing grade in a course. But why do we do this? What is it about this last test that makes us forget to eat, sleep, breathe?
Most of us will say that we just simply don't want to fail. We fear the thought of letting ourselves down, feeling like we have failed ourselves, our professor, even families. Some will suggest that failing would be a waste of money. When we are spending hundreds/thousands just to attend school, failing would be unethical and disappointing to say the least.
So, how do we learn to take a chill pill during these finals? We first have to realize that a final exam does not define the type of students we are capable of becoming. Finals are just a way of knowing where you are as a student for a single semester and the reality is, if you don't like where you are, you work harder to prove your worth. School is so necessary in this day and age that avoiding it just wont help. Take a deep breath in, deep breath out. Start doing yoga or take a nap if needed. We are not failures. We will never be failures if we work to improve and learn to relax.
