We saw what the ladies wore to and from classes, now it's time to let the guys have a chance at the fashion game. This week, I take a look at some street style looks from men at New York University students and ask what they think about the fashion in and around campus.

Benjamin Zinevich, CAS Class of 2019, Politics

Hometown: Clinton, New Jersey

What do you think about the NYU/NYC fashion scene?

“I think it has its stuff together. There’s also a very clear difference between people who you know can buy fashion and people who just know what to put together.”

Jonathan Marty, Gallatin Class of 2019, Urban Studies

Hometown: Pelham, New York

Why did you choose your outfit today?

“Well, it’s autumn, and therefore I’m going with the button-up underneath the sweater, pop the collar up over the sweater. It’s a nice look, makes me feel like an English teacher. I enjoy it quite a bit. I’ve got the khaki pants. I honestly prefer corduroy pants. I haven’t found a good fitting set recently. I often wear black jeans but these kind of go against the colors nicely. I wear this little jacket, this Carhart jacket I got for like $12 at a thrift store, keeps me warm. I like that.”

Jake Zacharia, Steinhardt Class of 2017, Music Technology

Hometown: Scotch Plains, New Jersey

What do you think about the NYU/NYC fashion scene?

“I think that’s it’s very diverse, and at the same time very homogeneous in that people like to wear a lot of black with white shoes, people like to wear a lot of denim, and people still have a lot of style and a lot of their own voice that comes through their fashion, unlike myself.”

Naveen Raghuraman, CAS Class of 2017, Neuroscience

Hometown: born in Chennai, India - grew up in West Windsor, New Jersey

Why did you choose your outfit today?

“It’s not too cold today, and I like how I look. I like colors. I like Timberlands, for one thing, because they’re very New York, very hip-hop. I like skinny jeans. I’m hipster trash.”

Marshall Winfield, SPS Class of 2019, Sports Management

Hometown: London, England, United Kingdom

What do you think about the NYU/NYC fashion scene?

“I think some people are a bit ridiculous with their fashion and most people here just want to dress nicely because they’re in New York City and being seen by real people every day as opposed to if we were on a college campus where it would probably be sweatpants and hoodies and possibly just pajamas.”

Ben Shelley, SPS Class of 2018, Schack Institute of Real Estate

Hometown: New York, NY

Why did you choose your outfit today?

“You know, the rain jacket, obviously because of the weather, but I really love it. It’s very comforting. It’s very warm and I don’t have to wear a lot under it. It’s simple and stylish. The blue sweater on blue – I like to be colorful. I express myself a lot through my matching layers, so all of this kind of comes into a fulfilling outfit that makes me smile.”

Sam Shapiro, Gallatin Class of 2018, Jewish Studies, Politics, and History

Hometown: Storrs, Connecticut

What do you think about the NYU/NYC fashion scene?

“I’m really probably the least fashion conscious person I know. Whenever I’m dressing myself to go out my main priority is always comfort, very rarely looks. I actually went through a phase almost of trying to rebel against the whole fashion culture at NYU. There was a two-week period during my freshman year where I went to class in slippers. I’ve matured a little since then, but I don’t tend to buy name brands or look for very expensive pieces of clothes. I just look for what’s durable and what’s comfortable.”

Brady MacManus, CAS Class of 2019, Romance Languages

Hometown: Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania

Why did you choose your outfit today?

“I wanted to be able to feel like I looked good, because I feel like when I feel like I look good, other people feel like I look good. Like when I feel confident about how I look it kind of projects itself on other people. I didn’t want to just stereotypically wear all black and be like, ‘I’m fashionable.’ Obviously, I feel like that’s a good move but it’s not necessarily me, so I wanted to kind of mix traditional, all-black fashionable, with my tendency to just kind of dress comfortably. And I also love this jacket so I wear it all the time.”

David Sohn, Stern Class of 2017, Business, Finance, and Management

Hometown: Cresskill, New Jersey

What do you think about the NYU/NYC fashion scene?

“You definitely have a lot of diversity, in terms of fashion. I think that reflects the diversity of the student body as a whole, as well. You have people going to class in sweatpants. I do that a lot, especially when it’s warmer. But then you’ll also have people wearing very high-end fashion stuff and then everything in between.”

Charles Lyttle, CAS Class of 2019, Journalism and TBD

Hometown: Los Angeles, California

Why did you choose your outfit today?

“I kind of just threw on what I usually wear. I really like to layer and it happens to make me very warm all the time. I’m from a warmer climate so I’m a little sensitive. I’m wearing a cashmere Polo sweater and a jacket – really schvitzy. I’m wearing these red Nike trainers, kind of pissed at first [because] I think they look stupid. I just threw them on because they would go well in the rain. I’ve got this umbrella, handle broke the first week I got it, but it serves me well. It’s hard to close. Sometimes it pops out indoors if I don’t wrap it up, but it’s not too wet today.”

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
