Homelessness is often an overlooked problem in our nation. We all see them wandering the streets like spirits wandering in search of peace, and money. When they ask for money we just tell ourselves that they don't really need our money, and go on our way because after all, they would just use the money for drugs or a fancy car.
What if those people we just pass by truly are in need of money for a meal? What if we deny them our change because of our prejudices? Most of us can't even begin to imagine what it's like to be homeless or in such desperate straits that we have to beg on the side of the road. I can't imagine what it's like to not have a place to sleep at night, not have a place to write on while filling out your job applications, not have a place where you can let your guard down and relax.
Often the homeless take to the streets and beg for money. There is often a negative stigma that the people begging on the street really aren't in need, but rather are looking for a quick buck. Like with violence in our nation, this issue is perceived as a larger problem than it actually is. (See Neil Potman for more information on violence in America.)
Those in need are asking for a jumpstart to get their lives back on track. They need help and are reaching out to complete strangers. Sure there will always be those who lie and deceive for personal gain, but do we let those who are truly in need to suffer?
Compassion
Compassion is key in every aspect of life and especially when it comes to those in need. It's not just compassion, but rather a combination of compassion and empathy. Apathy will only breed more apathy, pain, and struggle. Empathy is the only way to break the cycle and to care for our fellow man (or woman). It is through empathy that we are better able to understand the lives of the homeless and the destitute.
To show compassion means that we don't let one bad apple spoil the bunch, so at times we give others the benefit-of-the-doubt.
Charity
Homelessness is a problem and it can only be fixed through charity. Charity takes on many different forms. For example, instead of handing out $20 bills on the street you can give a panhandling person a warm cup of coffee, or even a meal.
Ultimately the greatest thing we can provide for those in need are the skills and means to attain the basic necessities for life: food, water, shelter, clothing, and a means to acquire and maintain these (a job). A few methods that are already established are homeless shelters, food banks, free job training, etc. How effective they are, as is, is a whole different article.
To summarize:
Don't be a jerk.
You can't even begin to imagine what it's like to be homeless/destitute.
Instead of making fun of those in need, do something for them.
Above all else, respect your fellow humans.
