One in eight women is diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. They go through chemo and radiation… some even receive single or double mastectomies. The American Cancer Society has estimated over 40,000 women would die from breast cancer in 2015. This leaves families and friends devastated. Knowing this and having experience with the lasting affects of losing someone to breast cancer, I am a huge advocate for breast cancer awareness. Purchasing pink bracelets, car magnets, sweatshirts and anything else that donates money to the cause is something I do frequently. There is, however, some merchandise I do not support…
Ta-tas? Boobies? Breast cancer is serious, not sexy. Recently there was a “national no bra day” sweeping Instagram in order to promote sexual awareness. I can’t be the only one who doesn't see AT ALL how this supports breast cancer. Girls taking risqué pictures on social media does nothing but diminish the seriousness of this horrible disease. Encouraging women to get mammograms, spreading the word that early detection is key and raising money for breast cancer awareness… that’s how you support and fight for a cure.
When passing a breast cancer awareness bake sale last year I heard people yelling to passing people “Save second base” and “save a rack” I couldn't help but be angry. I give the kids credit for supporting such a good cause, but why does it have to be so sexualized? A body being taken over… women being filled with pain and constant treatment… that should never be portrayed as racy. A family losing a mother, a daughter, an aunt, a grandma… it’s not sexy. I will not “save second base” by donating, I will save a loved one.
I can only believe sexualizing breast cancer will come to an end if we educate everyone on the horrors of this disease
This is the information people need to know. So next time you want to give back encourage others to provide strength and support, save the women of the world, and join the fight to end breast cancer.
Hope for the fighters
Peace for the survivors
Prayers for the taken
