Stop Judging My Major | The Odyssey Online
Start writing a post

I started college thinking I was going to be a teacher. I was dead set on it and I thought it was the career for me. Once I started to take some classes, I realized this isn’t exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I had a passion for sports and writing and I knew I wanted to pursue a career where I could deal with both of these things. I decided to change my major to journalism with an emphasis in print, broadcast, and web. As soon as I started taking journalism classes I knew I had made the right choice for my future. I want to be a sports journalist. I want to write about sports teams for a living. It’s a big dream, I know!

When people would ask me about my major I got a lot of mixed reactions. Some people thought it was super interesting and that it was a great choice for me. A lot of others judged me. People would tell me I had a guaranteed job teaching. They would say I will never get a job in journalism because there aren’t any jobs like that out there. I currently bartend to make my way through college. When I was telling a customer about my major she told me I would be a bartending for the rest of my life.

Just because I do not have a typical major like education or nursing does not mean I won’t get a job and be successful. Every career path is different. It is what you make of it. If you want something bad enough you will get it. Everyone has different passions and goals. It is unfair to tell someone they aren’t going to be successful because of the major their chose. There are plenty of people out there who didn’t take a single college course and they are extremely successful.

In less than six months, I will cross the graduation stage. It will by far be the proudest day of my life. I know I will be successful. It might not be right after graduation. I know I will have to work for it, but I will be successful. My major isn’t a joke. This is what I want to do with the rest of my life. This is the career I will be happy with. I thank everyone for their concern, but I know I will be just fine!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
