Stop Complaining About Things You Can Change

You have the power.

Stop Complaining About Things You Can Change
Russ Jones

I feel like we as a society have begun to complain about everything. It's almost become a competition. I'll be talking to someone at the library about a test and paper I have to do this week and then suddenly they're telling me about the two papers, three tests, and two lab assignments they have to do. Then they're looking at me with this face that tells me that they've just won the competition of who has more things to complain about.

It's not a competition, guys. It's not about who has more things to complain about. We need to stop complaining about things that are completely in our control. We have the power to make choices and change aspects of our life. Stop complaining about the situation and change it!

If you're not happy with your weight, start eating healthier and exercising. If you aren't happy in your relationship, break it off and get out of it. If you aren't satisfied with your job, work towards getting another one. If you procrastinate all of your work until you have 20 things to accomplish in one week, start making the adjustment to get these things done earlier.

I know I'm making it sound like it's so easy and simple and that's because it is. I have been in every single one of those situations. I've complained about my weight, the guy I wasn't happy dating, my job, and all the things I put off doing until the last minute.

Here's how I fixed my thinking and changed my life. I started eating healthier and focusing on my workouts, I broke up with that jerk of a guy, I got another job that I genuinely enjoy doing, and now I make "To Do Lists" that help me get certain things done every day.

You can change your situation. Is it always easy? No, it's not. Is it always as hard as we make it out to be? No, it isn't.

We forget that we have the power and the opportunity to change our lives every day. It starts with one choice: one choice that changes the day and once that choice becomes a consistent choice, it can change our lives. Constantly complaining about things that we can change only makes your mindset more negative and in turn makes it pretty hard to enjoy life when you're always subconsciously upset.

It's so easy to complain, though. I do it a lot about little things that really don't matter and that I'm really not even complaining about. I complain to complain sometimes. I catch myself doing it and have to make the mental adjustment to fix it. It's not easy and it's not something that will happen overnight. Sometimes it's just easier to complain and not do what you need to do.

Well, I'm here to say stop it. Stop complaining and start doing. Be the person who changes their own life because they were strong enough to make the change. Accept everything that comes your way and face it head on with a can-do attitude. We have the power to make choices about our lives, so make some good ones.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
