I'm not going to beat around the bush (I'll leave that to mainstream media) - I'm going to dive right into it. Once upon a time, New York City was feeling the Bern. Bernie Sander's Washington Square Park rally brought 30 - 40,000 supporters together, and the number would have been even higher if supporters like myself didn't have school or work commitments. The same goes for his rally in the Bronx - where 18,500 supporters poured in. On April 19th, voter suppression put out our flame.
New Yorkers made arrangements to get to voting sites as early as possible to cast a vote for their hopeful presidential candidate - you know, the one with the white hair and the thick Brooklyn accent. Unfortunately, it was in the borough that Sanders calls his hometown that the greatest amount of voter suppression and voter fraud occurred. Thousands of citizens were deprived of their voting rights and turned away because their names were somehow not on the list. Voting sites were to open at 6 am - they opened at noon in many locations, forcing many voters to leave. Sound like a democracy? I think not.
But the fact of the matter is, this isn't news to us. We know the election is rigged, we know it's going to be a strenuous battle. What mainstream media refuses to tell the public, however, is that a win for Sanders is still possible. Since the beginning of his campaign, the media has been degrading Sanders and underestimating his ability to win the nomination all while counting on him to not only drop out of the presidential race, but to also support Clinton on her hopeful journey to the White House.
With all these discrepancies in mind, we must remember that if want to see Senator Sanders in the White House next year, we need the math more than the momentum. Here's how:
We've got some of the most important states left to tackle. All eyes are on California, but let's not forget that we've got major states like New Jersey and Pennsylvania (as well as many others) left. This means we've got a whole lot of voters left to reach out to. Good news is, we can approach hundreds of voters via phonebanking, textbanking, facebanking, and canvassing. Although all these methods sound far fetched, they are very simple to carry out.
1. Phonebanking
Phonebanking is a process in which volunteers make phone calls to voters and inform them about Bernie Sanders and his campaign, while ensuring that every voter they contact is well informed about their rights. Not only do we need phonebankers who can efficiently inform and persuade the public to join the revolution, but we need bilingual phonebankers. Hillary Clinton is at an advantage because she's got a majority of the minorities by her side. Bilingual phonebankers have the power to break this trend - solely by the use of proper rhetoric. 2. Textbanking
Similar to phonebanking, textbanking allows you reach out to large groups of voters at once via mass messages. Thanks to textbanking, volunteers can inform voters about major events such as rallies, registration deadlines, voting days voting sites, as well as much more. 3. Facebanking
It's the age of social media, folks! Through facebanking, you reach out to your facebook friends and friends of friends (who have liked the Bernie Sanders page on facebook) and invite them to events while raising awareness about the campaign. Visit https://www.reddit.com/r/SandersForPresident/ for more information on facebanking.
4. Canvassing
If you are outgoing and have the time on your hands, then canvassing, or door to door campaigning is an amazing way to spread the word. Furthermore, if you are bilingual, this is an excellent way for you to go out and to raise your voice in your community. An app known as Field the Bern makes it easier to learn about canvassing and puts information about Bernie's stance on multiple issues right into your hands. Download the app on your smartphone today, and begin! Visit https://fieldthebern.com/ for more information.
We can't keep letting the establishment suppress our voices and suppress our votes. Let's put up a strong fight and if they try to shut the door on us, let's FIGHT BACK HARDER. The race to the White House isn't over just yet.
