Yes, you read the headline right. I’m 19 years old, and I still don’t have my driver's license. Many people might be shocked or surprised, and others may be wondering how exactly I get around. Countless people have made jokes or even “threw shade” my way for not having a license. I get that, but let me explain why I still don’t have my license — and why I’m not ashamed at all.
There are people who have shortcomings and simply acknowledge them. Then, there are people who have shortcomings, acknowledge them and actually do something about it. I’m trying to be the latter. To begin with, I still don’t have my driver's license because I never really had anyone teach me how to drive when I was younger. And, when I did try driving, I always felt consumed by anxiety and had trouble concentrating as well. Driving was (and still is) pretty scary to me. In addition, I couldn’t afford driving lessons either.
I’m often asked how I get around town. I either catch rides with friends (yes, I offer gas money), ride my bike or my mom offers to drop me off. If it’s absolutely necessary, I’ll take the bus, but that doesn’t happen often. Don’t get me wrong, I always fantasize about being able to blast my music in my car during late night drives. I’ll be honest, I do have my wistful moments whenever I pass by car dealerships, or when I’m in my friends’ cars.
But, rather than feeling discouraged about my present situation, I am choosing to do something about it. I recently picked up a driver's manual from the DMV, and I have been studying it ever since. I intend on re-taking my written test before the end of the summer. I also intend on practicing driving with other family members, since I did not have that opportunity before. I don’t feel bad or guilty about my situation, and I won’t let anyone try to belittle me about it either. And, for those who are in the No-License Club like me, don’t worry — you aren’t alone!
