If you are from Sterling Heights you know all about Sterling Fest.
Whether you go for the rides, the food, to people watch, the beer tent, the balloon launch, the entertainment, just to look at all the different carnies, those elephant ears that are bigger than your head, the local businesses selling things, food from local restaurants, or simply remembering the good ol' days.
While growing up it was the place to be from when you were 48" tall (tall enough to ride the fireball or all the big kid rides) to about our ninth grade year of high school. Then it just turns into a perfect place for food.
1. All the rides.
Sterlingfest is really for any age, as long as you are good with motion sickness, that is. It lasts about three days, and wrist bands range from $18-20 a ticket. That coupon is crucial for the younger kids spending all three days at the festival.
2. Carnival food.
In all honesty it is probably the most unhealthy food there is: deep fried this, extra large that, and you spend an arm and a leg for all the tastiness that makes you feel crappy a few hours later.
3. People watching.
People watching is key, and you see so many different types of people. It is honestly a highlight of attending the concerts, or just walking around the park.
4. Food from around town.
Buffalo Wild Wings, BD Mongolian Grill, Villa Penna, Bangkok, Antonio's, Mercurio's, Coach's Ice Cream, The Honey Tree, Polish Century Club, Jet's, and Ike's. So you get a little bit of everything and all for a decent price and a good portion size!
5. Balloon launch that turned into a beach ball toss.
The balloon launch has been a part of Sterlingfest for more than 30 years; however, it is now a beach ball toss due to environmental hazards.
6. Live bands.
So many bands play throughout the day and night. It is loud, eventful, and overly exciting.
7. Henna tattoos and face paintings.
Face paintings and henna are always a fun extra you can do at Sterlingfest, and for any age!
8. Local business sales.
Along the public library and police station there are tons of tents set up with all sorts of arts and crafts, clothing, signs, jewelry, and more that you can purchase!
9. Carnival Games.
The carnival games are always pricey, but always a fun time. Especially when you walk away with a prize.
10. Being tall enough to ride the rides.
It is always a great feeling knowing you can finally ride all the big kid rides. A lot of us could not wait to hit a certain height to do just about everything and anything.
11. Growing up.
When we are young we spend all three days at Sterlingfest, from open to close, and can't wait till July hits again so we can do it all over again. As you get older you go more for the food, the entertainment, and maybe even the beer tents. The greatest part about Sterlingfest is bringing the whole community together, all generations, all different ages, and you can't help but leave with a happy belly and lots of laughs and memories.
