Why they NEED to stop!

Stereotyping is something that is done on a daily bases by so many people, it's actually become a part of the American way. I am Mexican-American, yet to everyone I look "white". I'm lighter skinned and have blonde hair as well as blue eyes. I was taught but my parents not to judge a book by its cover and treat others the way you'd want to be treated. Yet, I am shocked at the many that lack that common respect. On a day to day bases, I am judged asked about my race. Right after I tell them their response is "Really? You look white!" . My question for all of those who say I look "white" is, what exactly is a "white" to you? Am I "white" because I have light skin? Am I "white" because I have blonde hair? Am I "white" because I have blue eyes? Please explain to me why I look "white" and what "white" truly is. Because in all honesty I'm not to sure, but you all have it figured out and defined the way you're throwing it around. Every race has different skin tones it doesn't make them any less of what they are.

Just the other day I was sitting at work and a customer came up. I greeted her the same way I greet all customers, "Hi, how are you doing? Is there anything I can help you with?" the customer then in Spanish responded "why would they put a WHITE girl to work here?" so I responded to her in Spanish saying "they didn't put a white girl to work here, but you're welcome to leave if you want." She looked at me in complete and utter disbelief like those words did not come out of my mouth and walked away. She looked Hispanic but I greeted her just as I would greet any customer. I didn't assume that because she looked Hispanic that all she spoke was Spanish. Usually after I greet them in English and the customer looks confused or asked if I speak Spanish and then I proceed to greet them in Spanish and assist them with what they need. Yet in the incident that just happened the other day she had seen me as a "white" girl who couldn't speak Spanish to help her and assist her.

I know, I am not the only one who can relate to this. No matter if you're Hispanic, African-American, Arabic or anything and you don't fit the society image to what you're "supposed" to look like then they are profiling you. I know personally I'm tired of people doing it to me, so I know you have to be too. Stereotyping people by appearance just needs to stop being a thing in the United States. Yet, we as a population have been doing it for so long that it's just become custom and done out of habit that no one even realizes they're doing it anymore.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
