It's the second week of January, meaning we're all either hanging on to our New Year's resolutions by a thread or have successfully broken them.
If you're anything like me, you've created the same resolutions for the past 10 years in a row, but are actually attempting to stick with them this time around. Recently, I went on a rant about how difficult it is to not break them when suddenly I was interrupted by someone who said,
"It shouldn't be difficult if the end result is what you really want".
Well, damn. On the surface, this statement speaks all types of truths. We are all capable of holding on to a resolution if we are successful at altering our mindset. The difficult part of the whole process is most certainly training our brains to change. Once we've officially transformed our mindset, we can confidently say we're to a good start. Need some guidance on how to stay committed to your New Years Resolution? I've got the answers for you right here.
1. Freshen the brain, open the mind.
Start with a clean slate. Brainstorm new years resolutions on to a sheet of paper. Think about what you really want, and train your mind to be open to all approaches that may allow you to accomplish your goal. Most importantly, always stay positive.
2. Choose an attainable resolution.
By setting a goal that means the most to you, you're choosing one that is both important and personal. This is a resolution that will remind you daily that all the obstacles will be worth it, but if you continue, the end result will be one of the things you'll be most proud of.
3. Set specific guidelines.
Give structure to your resolutions. Specify the extra details that surround the route of execution you will be taking to accomplish your goals. The more specific you make them, the easier it will be to stay on track.
4. Track your progress.
This step can be done by setting milestones. By creating milestones, you are setting mini goals within your major goal. When you start to notice that you are accomplishing the mini points, you'll feel a sense of reassurance that everything your doing will be worth it at the end.
5. Talk about your goals.
By speaking about your goals with other people, you're putting your ideas out into the universe. You can ask for new ideas on how to approach your goals, and may even learn that your friend may have the same one in mind! Besides this, many people say that those who tell others are more likely to accomplish their own goals.
6. Greet your goals daily.
By posting your goal on your door, refrigerator, or anywhere for that matter, you are setting up daily reminders for yourself. No excuses!!
7. Don't procrastinate!
Set a date. Set a time. Don't keep saying "I'll start next week". The sooner you start, the sooner the results.
8. Reward yourself.
Who doesn't like to treat themselves?? By rewarding yourself for your great accomplishments, you are giving a positive boost to your mindset. This technique also encourages you to keep going, and to not give up.
9. If you slip off the path, keep going!
It's okay to make a mistake. Don't feel as if your entire plan and all your accomplishments have gone to waste. Just acknowledge where you went wrong and keep on going!
