The struggle of being home with nothing to do.

Staying In Shape Over Break

You’ve finished finals, packed your bags, and headed home for the break. You’re exhausted from studying, and you’re ready for a much-deserved break from school. Many of us decide to lounge around, eat way too much food, and do nothing, which is great. However, everyone struggles with the problem of staying in shape. It’s so hard to do. However, here are some tips to help you stay in a routine over winter break.

1. Think of exercise as a reward.

You’ve been stuck inside for the past few weeks studying for finals. Chances are, you’ve slacked off from your regular workout regime already. Think of the break as a chance to do something you haven’t had the chance to do for a while, rather than a chore you have to do. Having a better mindset can help you get excited to exercise, rather than dreading it.

2. Plan it out.

If you write down that you have to do something, you’re more likely to do it. If you’re anything like me, you’ll think about working out, say you’ll do it later, and then have your day fill up with errands and social activities that you can’t find the time. If you either work out right away or schedule a time to work out, you’ll have a better chance of actually doing it.

3. Find a buddy!

It’s been said before, but having someone to work out with will motivate you to do it. It’ll make it more enjoyable, and you can motivate each other to stay in shape.

4. Use it at a social time.

Similar as above, you don’t have to work out alone. Seeing as the break is a great time to catch up with friends from high school, you can catch up with friends while working out. Ask your friend to go for a walk with you to catch up. Or, going shopping for presents and walk to the different stores. Or bike to the park. You can make it a great time.

5. Try something new.

You’ll have at least two weeks off from school. If you’ve ever been curious about a new workout, or you want to try a new activity, now is the perfect time to do it. You can take the time to find something new, look up videos, or find some drop in classes you can take. Now that the stress of school is on pause for now, you can take some time for self-care and exploration.

6. Work out while watching TV.

The break is a great time to catch up on your favorite shows and watch Christmas movies. You might be spending a ton of time watching your favorite shows. While you deserve some time to relax, you can also spend some of this time working out. During commercials, you can do some strength exercises, or find an exercise challenge for the show you’re watching.

7. Try some new (healthy) recipes.

The holidays is a time for treats and goodies. However, there are some healthy alternatives as well. You can take this free time to learn how to make something new that is also good for you.

8. Set a goal.

Find something small you can achieve in the break. If you want to start running again or maintain your weight, make that your goal! You won’t be able to drop 10 pounds, in a healthy way at least, but you can achieve something.

So, it’s a challenge, but you can stay in shape over break! You deserve time off and time to relax, but you can also take advantage of the break to stay fit.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
