Tips And Techniques That Will Help Keep You Safe

Stay Safe Rutgers!

We all know that the campus of Rutgers in New Brunswick, NJ isn’t always the safest place to be at night. We see it in the numerous crime alerts, and in the few tragedies that have happened this past year. Although Rutgers is a fun and exciting place it can also be very dangerous. When we go out at night, whether it’s to the bars, to a party, or even coming home late from the library we need to be cautious. There are many things we can do to increase our chances of getting to our destinations safe and sound and here are just a few:

Strength In Numbers: The first rule of thumb is to never walk alone, especially late at night. If there is somewhere you need to go, or if you need to get home, find your friends and have them accompany you. There is strength in numbers and if you take the walk alone, you are a moving target. If they are good friends, they should be more than willing to walk you home. If they refuse because they want to stay out and leave you on your own, you should probably get new friends.

Blue Light Alarm Systems: Knowing where the blue lights are on campus probably isn’t such a bad idea. They are there for your safety so take notice in where they are. Rutgers is affiliated with not only their own police department, but New Brunswick and Piscataway as well. If you were to push one of those buttons someone should be there almost immediately. These blue lights don’t only serve as an alarm system but also as an escort service. By using the emergency phone, or by dialing 732-932-7211 you will be connected with a dispatcher who will send a public safety representative to escort you.

The Knight Rider: If you’re ever out later then you planned on and need to get to a different campus after bus hours, no need to call a cab. The University provides its students with the Knight Rider. You just dial 732-932-RIDE (7433), give them your location and destination, and a shuttle bus will come pick you up no questions asked. They will make sure you get home safely and for free!

Emergency Contacts: Another little technique I like to use is by utilizing the Favorites section in my phone. All of my emergency contacts are in there, which include the New Brunswick Police (732-745-5200), The Rutgers Police (732-932-7111) and the Knight Rider. If you’re ever in a situation where you need to contact the authorities immediately having them saved as your Favorites allows you to do so in a fraction of the time.

Safety Apps: Recently I’ve been told about these new apps that are available specifically for your personally safety. There is “Watch Over Me”, “bSafe”, “React Mobile”, “Stay Safe”, “On Watch”, and many more. By using GPS, SMS, video, alerts, alarms, and a variety of other features, these apps aim to keep you safe. I highly recommend anyone with a smart phone to check these Apps out!

Rutgers can be a dangerous place but that shouldn’t hold you back from going out and having fun! Use these tips and techniques that will help you stay safe and alert!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
