As college students, we are already on the path to reaching a successful future. Volunteering is another great way to help others in your community and strive from success. Not only are you helping others in a volunteering position, but you are also learning and acquiring new skills that you can use in your career and personal life. Volunteering is also a great way for your resume to stand out, and the personal rewards that come from helping others are unbeatable. Greek life already has a great focus on philanthropy and stewardship, and college students, in general, can always lend a great helping hand. Here is a great variety of places to volunteer in San Diego that can also cater to your personal interests.
1. San Diego Humane Society/San Diego Zoo
If you love animals, you can volunteer at the local Humane Society and get to be up close and personal with your favorite household pets. You will have jobs such as dog-walking, laundry, cleaning, or simply cuddling with animals. You will have to sign up and attend an orientation so you can learn all the duties.
Another place where you can get up close with animals is the San Diego Zoo! Although, you probably won't see much of any household pets, this is a great way to see exotic animals every day. There is an application process for volunteers, and they do recommend that your career has something to do with animals, such as zoology or biology.
2. San Diego Food Bank
This volunteer specifically works to feed the homeless. With a large homeless community in San Diego, the food bank offers a place to help those less fortunate. The emotional and mental reward of directly helping those less fortunate is so great, and it really brings people together. Some volunteer responsibilities include sorting and inspecting, cleaning, and assembling food packages. There are a few forms you will need to fill out and submit, but almost anyone can volunteer at the food bank. This is a great fit for anyone who simply wants to make a difference and feel good doing it.
3. San Diego Habitat for HumanityIf you are interested in building, construction, engineering, architecture, or you are just really strong, volunteering at the Habitat for Humanity is a great fit you. Building and fixing homes is the main focus of Habitat for Humanity. They have many different building programs and also hold a strong awareness for the environment and being green. You simply need to give some information and sign up for a date; almost anyone can volunteer. If you want to build a home for someone who is unable to have one otherwise, this could be the right place for you.
Volunteering is a very rewarding experience, not only for the people you are helping, but also for yourself. There are many other places to volunteer across the nation, if these specific locations do not interest you. There are volunteer opportunities at schools and with education, at nursing homes, and in the health field. There are volunteer positions in almost every field of work, and if you do your research, you can find a right fit for you.
