Start Of The Semester Struggles

We're all just trying to survive.

Start Of The Semester Struggles

So far, we have all been back in college for about a month. Therefore, classwork is beginning to pile up, work schedules are becoming busier and sniffles, coughs and scratchy eyes are infesting campus. My first month of school has been absolutely crazy, at least to me.

The other day, I got out of class early and decided to sit on a bench outside and just take a breather. I ended up typing out some semester struggles in my notes on my phone. From my brain, to the notes on my phone, to now, an article — here are some of my top start of the semester struggles!

1. Realizing you forgot necessities at home

Within a day, I already had a list of items I had forgotten at home - a certain shirt, a colander for my kitchen, storage containers — you name it. The first night I cooked dinner with my roommate, we looked at each other and laughed, because we both realized we were so unprepared. Who would have thought a colander was so necessary to cook a simple meal? Apparently not me.

2. Someone constantly taking your unassigned assigned seat

I have included this struggle in one of my previous articles, and let me tell you, no matter what year you are, or what class you are in, someone will always take your unassigned assigned seat, especially during the first two weeks of classes.

3. Getting sick and realizing your mom is not there to take care of you

Luckily, I did not face this challenge my freshman year. However, this year, a sinus infection and an ear infection hit me. Hard. Having to take care of yourself and still try to work and go to class when you cannot breathe and feel like your head is going to explode is definitely a challenge.

We're in college now. There is no such thing as a parent calling you in sick to school, or easily calling in sick to work. And there is definitely no one willing to make you soup while you lay in bed for three days straight.

4. Completely running out of money

If I look at my bank statement for the past month, I promise you, almost all of my purchases would be Starbucks, Chick-Fil-A, textbooks, groceries, and more Starbucks.

I have learned, if you ever want to get a college student's attention, say the word, "free."

5. Trying to balance classes, work, school organizations, and a social life

There is never enough time in a day. But hey, I guess you have to give a little to get a little?

6. Coming to the conclusion that you now need coffee to survive

Like I said before, there is never enough time in a day. Coffee can be a wonderful, wonderful energy boost. Especially when you go to class all day, and go to work right afterward. Coffee at seven in the morning and evening? Definitely.

7. The daily struggle of looking cute for class or going in a t-shirt

99% of the time, we have already all given up. Over the summer, I told myself I wanted to attempt to look nice for my classes. By the second day, I was wearing a t-shirt, workout shorts and had not a drop of make-up on.

College — such a love hate relationship. One month of fall semester down, three to go.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
