Start Getting Healthy Now

12

So if you’re like me, you made a Pulitzer Prize worthy effort at getting that hot Victoria’s Secret body for Spring Break, but failed miserably.I’m putting all the blame on Coop DeVille staying open late, allowing me to order cheese fries at ungodly hours of the night.

So, if you’re a failure like myself, let’s make the best effort we can to getting a healthy body for Summer 2014! Everyone always talks about how they are going to get super healthy over the summer, completely change, and come back for fall semester looking the best they ever have. Why wait? So why don’t we start making small changes in our daily routine NOW so that by the time summertime rolls around, we already have added great habits to our daily routine!

Have a Positive Mindset

Don’t make your goal to become the skinniest you can be, and don’t compare yourself to your friends. Everyone has different body shapes and you’re stuck with the genetics you have. Instead, have the mindset of becoming the healthiest version of yourself you can be.

Become a H2Oaholic

What is commonly said is that we are supposed to drink 8-ounce glasses of water per day. Water keeps you hydrated, and it is way better for you than drinking a ton of diet cokes throughout the day. To remind myself to drink my water, I bring a form of a water bottle to school with me and refill it throughout the day at the water dispensers located across campus.

Stop Pressing the Snooze Button

There are so many good outcomes that result from starting your day early. One of the biggest excuses I hear is that “I don’t have the time to work out.” Well make time and stop making lame excuses. Get up early right when your alarm goes off, and make an effort to go on a jog/walk. Working out early in the morning is a great way to get your mind and body charged for the rest of the day! Soon, waking up early and working out will become a habit and won’t be as annoying, and before you know it, you’ve turned into the chipper morning person that most of us can’t stand. But it’s worth it.

Bring Your Workout Clothes to School

If you are one of those people who have those horrible 8am’s or who really will just never be a morning person, this option is for you. Take advantage of the school’s gym, and workout after class. Make it a rule that you cannot leave the campus until you put in a good amount of exercise for the day. You will leave school in a much better mood! I never regret the days I do workout, but I always get mad at myself for being lazy and skipping out.

Set Goals

Set realistic goals for yourself! Contrary to my belief, getting a VS model’s body is very unrealistic. So set a goal you know you can accomplish! Maybe you want to run that half marathon in August? This would be the perfect time to start training! Maybe you want to fit into your favorite pair of jeans from last year that are too small on you now? Find a goal to motivate you!

Get Your Friends Involved

Everything is easier when you have friends to help you out! Ask your friends to workout with you or to stop eating fast food. It makes accomplishing your goals so much easier when you have each other to cheer on! My sophomore year, a group of us would get together in the Crosby lobby on our floor and do the Insanity workout every day after classes. It motivated all of us to keep up with the workout because you didn’t want to be the in the group to be lazy and quit.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
