Joshua Feuerstein, a former television and radio evangelist with more than 1.8 million followers on Facebook, boldly criticized Starbucks' new cups. "Starbucks removed Christmas from their cups because they hate Jesus," he wrote, asking followers to use the hashtag #MerryChristmasStarbucks and to ask their baristas to write "Merry Christmas" on their cups instead of their names.
I first of all want to state that I am a Christian. Secondly, I don't give a crap what Starbucks puts on their cups as long as it holds my drink and doesn't have an Ouija board printed on it. When I read Feuerstein's comment, my first reaction was to laugh and then cry at the childishness of America.
To be offended that Jesus Christ is not on a holiday Starbucks cup is one of the most ridiculous things since the last time America got offended. Honestly I cannot think of one place (coffee or otherwise) that has religious symbols on their glassware. It is just a piece of cardboard that holds your drink, and that you are going to throw away within the hour. Starbucks did not take the Christ out of Christmas, they simply created a simple yet festive red cup. As a Christian, I do not believe that there needs to be a symbol of my faith on everything I eat, drink, or participate in. I'm also pretty certain that Jesus Christ saved my soul, thus I'm not looking for redemption in my vanilla latte, nor do I expect it to be my personal holy water.
Additionally, I would never tell my barista my name was "Merry Christmas", one because I'm not a child nor do I choose to act like one, and second I'm a leader not a follower. Instead I prefer to use my real name, Supergirl or Xena, Warrior Princess.
So if the red Starbucks cups offends you, get a cold drink, buy a cup, or make your own coffee at home. You won't have to be offended too much longer because the cups will change like they do every single season. But personally, I like the red cups and think the color makes me look better than ever walking to class, Starbucks in hand. #StarbucksIsFashion
