So if you have a television, computer, or a phone with internet access you have definitely heard about the Brock Turner case. In case you haven't had access to any of these during the summer months I will summarize for you quickly: Brock Turner, a student at Stanford, raped an unconscious female and got away with six months jail time because he had never done anything wrong before and he was drunk and being drunk makes you do dumb things. Wow, okay. Females everywhere (and some males) are screaming. Being a female (identifying or born) is difficult. I'm not going to sit here and talk about all the disparities, but there are many things that we have to worry about that men don't, and for the most part being alone while intoxicated is like almost number one on that list. Because of this "culture" Brock Turner explained that this is what ruined him. It was really brave of him to explain that this "party" culture is the reason that he forced himself on a girl, because I guess I must have forgotten that drinking turns you into a rapist. FALSE.
Stanford decided it was time to take matters into their own hands. Because this rape had occurred during a party while many were heavily intoxicated and under the influence, Stanford has banned the use of hard liquor for any underage students on campus. Now, this just may be me reading too far into things with the law and stuff, but I'm pretty sure the law states that drinking ANY alcohol under the age of 21 is illegal. Besides the fact that beer is not considered a hard liquor, and beer is any freshman's apple juice. In addition to this, Stanford as added an addendum titled, "Females Bodies and Alcohol." Until recently the page had stated,
“Research tells us that women who are seen drinking alcohol are perceived to be more sexually available than they may actually be. Individuals who are even a little intoxicated are more likely to be victimized than those who are not drinking. Other research studies have shown that men who think they have been drinking alcohol…feel sexually aroused and are more responsive to erotic stimuli, including rape scenarios.”
For anyone new to the United States, THIS IS AN IVY LEAGUE SCHOOL EXPLAINING THAT WOMEN ARE MORE SEXUALLY AVAILABLE WHEN THEY ARE DRUNK, and has only been changed in the past week or so.
Now, that's great Stanford. Practicing safe drinking is important especially because no matter how many times you tell college students not to do it, they're not going to listen. The problem is, this whole situation totally ignores the fact that DRINKING DOES NOT MAKE PEOPLE RAPE. They are bringing light to a situation that is completely false. People use drinking as an excuse to be more promiscuous but it does not make people rape. It is not called rape juice, a side effect is not you may rape someone tonight and we are not responsible. No. Too often girls are told that if they weren't intoxicated it wouldn't happen to them. Listen to the song people, "GIRLS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN!" As do guys. Guys actions constantly get excused when they are drunk but girls have to deal with the consequences.
So what I'm trying to say is, nice try Stanford but maybe a rape crisis hotline or sexual education is what you need. Preventive measures start when people are sober, when they learn the realities of rape and sexual assault.
