Though levels of excitement over summer break may vary, there comes a point during vacation where a certain sense of boredom begins to sink in. This article, with the help of Studio Ghibli characters, outlines the progression of the stages of boredom that can be experienced during the span of a few months that is summer vacation.
1. Initial excitement. It has only been a couple of days to a couple of weeks since the end of a busy semester and you would've liked it to end a few weeks sooner. Soon you'll be ready to just relax and have fun.
2. Planning getaways. You and your friends have been waiting all semester for this part. Whether it be a summer concert, show, or resort stay, you've all saved up and worked hard to the climax of the summer.
3. Period of work. This portion of summer gives you the most sense of purpose. Whether it's a part time job, cleaning, or simply taking care of errands so that the rest of your summer runs smoothly.
4. Getting closer to the mark of boredom. At this point, you may be waiting for bigger events you have in store later in the season, but for now you're comfortable reading a book, lazing about, and just carrying out basic tasks of survival.
5. Desperately waiting for your friends to call you. In stage five, you are probably not even a month into summer vacation when you can't stand the amount of free time you have in between what little you have planned. The amount of time you longed for during school has now become a burden. You've either completed everything of importance at the point , or you are putting it off until the last minute because you can't even comprehend what to do with this much freedom.
6. Getting used to a strange sleeping pattern. You promise you'll get back on track closer to beginning of Fall semester, but for now, staying up late and sleeping in shall stay a fad.
7. Binge watching and binge eating. Because, let's be honest. What else fun is there to do at this point?
8. Partying or outings with friends.
9. The "now what" stage. Literally nothing but going back to school can motivate you during the last leg of summer vacation.
10. Patching up your botched sleep schedule.
11. Turning yourself back into a somewhat responsible and presentable adult before that first Fall class.
