Like many people, music is a huge part of who I am. Now, I'm not the most musically talented, but I have a huge appreciation for it and I thought that I'd share two artists who lay pretty low, but are well worth the listen. I especially recommend the "Hours Spent Loving You" EP by both artists SPZRKT (Spazzy-Rocket) and Sango. It was released on March 8, 2015, but it's remained my go-to ever since it was released. It's something that I put on repeat when I lock myself in the library for hours on end to get things done, unwind on lazy Sundays, and get ready in the morning. I'm not the most familiar with them, but I'll do my best to do these amazing artists justice in this quick run-down of what I consider to be one of my top three favorite EPs.
Sango is a hip-hop producer based in Los Angeles, CA (currently residing in Seattle, WA) who released his first full length project "Unfinished & Satisfied" in 2010. In "Hours Spent Loving You" Sango contributed by laying a fluid transition between every song and providing a flawless production that will, without a doubt, give you goose bumps from start to finish. I've played this for hours on loop and shuffle and the vibe is beautiful in every track. What I particularly enjoy is that Sango is unafraid to express his adoration and faith through his music--paying beautiful homage to the Christian Hip Hop community with tracks like "JMK" (sampling "Jesus My King") and "How Do You Love Me" (one of my personal favorites).
SPZRT (Xavier Adams) is a Christian vocalist/musician based in San Antonio, TX who takes a lot of his sound from contemporary R&B. His voice is incredibly smooth and soft spoken, but it has great power all the same. It reminds me of purple sunsets. I sincerely don't know how else to phrase it. He has a proper full length album titled "Bonfire" (2014) and it's available for purchase on iTunes.
"Hours Spent Loving You" is a "summation of how relationships are viewed both earthly and heavenly," according to their label SOULECTION, which is also based in Los Angeles, CA. As revealed by SPZRKT on twitter, a part 2 for this project is set to be released this year!
Now for a quick rundown of each track.
1. "The Motive/Used To The Melody"
This track clearly sets the tone for the project as a whole. Don't fight the urge to feel the beat--just move with it. It's that song that will make you think of taking a drive with that special person with the windows down, followed by a quick car-dance session to "Used To The Melody." (Seriously, how do I make that my ringtone?)
2. "Hipster Girl"
This one is for the ladies. It's probably the second most swoon-worthy track on the project. I'd fall for it, at least. SPZRKT's voice makes it really hard to say no. The flow is infectious, so you better believe that you'll be pulling out all of your Drake dance moves. This song is also a very nice transition to the next track.
3. "Soon Enough"
This is the most swoon-worthy track on the project. Commitment is hard to find in the particular date culture that a lot of people are surrounded by, so this is extremely refreshing.
4. "Loneliest Times"
We all have bad days, some more than others. Living with mental illness is no easy task, so when it's hitting you especially hard, this is the song for you. Even if you aren't afflicted with such conditions, hearing these affirmations on the days when you feel like quitting the most is sometimes all that you need. This song features Waldo, a rapper under AGO music group, who works closely with Sango.
5. "Winter Toes"
This is a really cute song about getting "cold-feet" before a wedding but in a very different perspective. It's not about having second thoughts on the person, rather, it's about being afraid of failing the person who you love most and/or not fulfilling the expectations that come with marriage.
6. "How Do You Love Me"
This is, without a doubt, my favorite song on the project. I was so distracted by the beautiful instrumentals and SPZRKT's voice that I never thought of it as a spiritual piece. I gave it a better listen and, maybe after listening to it for the 100th time, I realized its true, beautiful message. It only made me love it more.
7. "JMK"
Or, better yet, "Jesus My King," as it oh so beautifully samples. Another spiritual song on the project, this definitely gives a beautiful finish to the project.
My hope is that you will look into these brilliant artists and maybe appreciate them as much as I do! If you like mellow hip-hop tracks with a soulful voice, I highly recommend this EP. I happened to stumble across this on tumblr and I've been grateful ever since. I wasn't even aware that these were devout Christian artists until way later on. I tend to listen to this genre/sound mindlessly while working and when I need an extra creative boost.
My Soundcloud is here, if you ever want to look into some new music.
