Spring Has Sprung

Hello Odyssey readers!

I am so excited to introduce myself as the new Editor-In-Chief of the UD edition of The Odyssey. Each week, I will be writing a letter about my thoughts, feelings, emotions, ideas, etc. that I happen to think somebody might actually want to read about. With that, I bring you my first Editor's Note.

Unless you spent the past three days holed up in your bedroom, you are no stranger to the fact that spring has finally arrived on the beautiful campus that we are lucky enough to call our second home. This past weekend was one for the books: the Dages, the long and competitive lines between El Diablo and Chipotle, and the quiet peacefulness of a warm Sunday afternoon spent in your bed while you re-hash the weekend's events and hope you didn't publicly embarrass yourself to a point of no return!

Springtime at Delaware is magical. I am not quite sure how to explain it, but there is something about the sudden arrival of spring weather that changes this campus' overall sense of community and friendliness. Suddenly, walking to and from class doesn't royally suck anymore. Class time commutes become a smile-filled stroll consisting of waves to your friends and smiles at cute boys from across the sidewalk. Somehow, all of your classes have become more interesting, and you actually participate and understand what is going on. Maybe it's the fact that you started to dress nicely again (dress well, test well, am I right?) and that gives you the confidence you need to speak up during class, or maybe it's the iced coffee you can proudly carry around with you every morning, now that the temperature has reached a point past freezing your hand out of texting capabilities, or maybe it's none of these things and I just think too much.

What I do know is this: with this glorious spring weather finally upon us, comes a crazy amount of activities on campus. There are philanthropy events, exercise opportunities, extracurricular activities, and new clubs to join! My super-scheduled brain is here to provide you with a breakdown of what's to come on campus, in terms of Greek life events over the next few weeks, in the order that they will occur.

Chi Fest, hosted by Theta Chi & Chi Omega. April 13 to April 15.

Chi Fest is a three-day philanthropy event filled with all of the typical sports events that we all know and love: volleyball, flag football, and basic field day games. The proceeds support the USO and Make A Wish Foundation. If you are like me, and in desperate need of CAP points, I strongly suggest you head over to Chi Fest to join in on the fun.

Phi Psi 500, hosted by Phi Psi. April 13 to April 16.

The fellas of Phi Psi are hosting a slew of events next week to raise money for the Boys & Girls Club of America. There will be 'capture the phlag' games, a 'Phind a Phi Psi' event, and a Day at the races event day. Day at the races should be real fun because you get to watch a bunch of sorority girls doing push-ups, sit-ups, and a box car relay. Don't underestimate our strength, boys.

Mr. and Miss CASAnova, hosted by Kappa Alpha Theta. April 15 at 7 p.m.

Theta will be hosting their first annual Mr. and Miss CASAnova event to raise money for their philanthropy! This is one of those fun ones where sororities and fraternities will be paired into teams to compete in events against other Chapters. Come out and support your fellow Greek community members WOOH!.

Delta Gamma Anchor Splash, The Little Bob. April 16.

DG's philanthropy event -- super different. It's a swimming competition between campus groups! The races consist of relay races, traditional swim events, and synchronized swimming. Shout out to DG for coming up with the most creative event!

Phi Hoops, hosted by AEPhi. April 16.

Phi Hoops allows all of you aspiring basketballers to show off your skills. Different chapters in Greek life will come together to play some ball, eat ice cream from the UDairy Moo Truck, and raise money for the Elizabeth Glaser pediatric AIDS foundation. If you are not into basketball, or if you get stage fright like me, cheering sections are greatly encouraged!

FIJI Islander, hosted by FIJI. April 20 to April 22.

FIJI's annual exotic Islander event is almost here. For Islander, Greek chapters compete in games of football, attend a Risk Management CAP event, and play in the FIJI Island Games. All of the proceeds go towards helping fight pediatric cancer so you are basically a bad person if you don't go.

Greek Love Duets, hosted by Sigma Kappa and Lamda Chi. April 21.

If you like to sing, listen to other people sing, or you like to gain CAP points in a genuinely entertaining way, I would highly suggest heading over to Greek Love Duets! Sororities and fraternities will be singing their hearts out for you. How could you miss it?

Phield Day, hosted by Phi Sig and Pi Kapp. April 22 to April 24.

The sweet, super cool, fun, and philanthropic ladies of Phi Sig and the Pi Kapp guys will be hosting our first ever Phield Day event! Sororities and fraternities will be paired to compete in flag football, dodgeball, and a day of field day inspired races (think egg on a spoon, three legged race, tug of war, etc.) This is your chance to redeem yourself from the awkward and uncoordinated days in elementary school when you lost all of your field day events. See ya there!

There are so many events to get involved in now that the weather is bright, sunshiny, and happy. So I encourage you to go forth, get CAP points, raise moolah for charity, and support the Greek Community of UD!

Lastly, if you are interested in getting involved with The Odyssey, we are looking for new writers as well as a contributing editor and a social media coordinator! Feel free to apply here.

xox,

Nina Price

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
