When you think of spring break in college, you probably think of everyone going to an overcrowded beach in Florida and partying the whole week with all their friends because that’s how movies and books have made it look. However, that’s obviously not the only way to have fun during spring break. I promise there are plenty of adventures to go on without reenacting the movie "Spring Breakers" (2013).
Now, by all means, if you do go on those trips and party at the beach all day with tons of other college students, there is nothing wrong with that. All I’m saying is that you don’t have to party with strangers, get drunk all week, and post a ridiculous amount of bikini pictures on Instagram to correctly enjoy your week off school. You could go on a hike, take a short road trip to a place nearby with a friend, read some books, have a movie night, and too many more to list.
There’s this picture in everyone’s mind of what college is “supposed to be like,” and I also had that image in my head until I actually went to college. The movies we see, the books we read, and what we hear from others portrays college as four years of being in fraternities and sororities, partying, and just having the best time of your life. While there are plenty of opportunities to do that, it’s about much more than that image. If you don’t go “spring breaking” down in Florida, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. But if you do, there is nothing wrong with that either.
Before I went to college, and even during my first year there, I had the thought in my mind that I would join a sorority, party with friends, and go on exciting spring break trips. That’s not at all what occurred, and I’m happy with that. You don’t HAVE to join Greek life to have fun. You don’t HAVE to party and be peer-pressured into drinking and doing drugs to have fun. You will still have the best time of your life in college, because you’ll meet new friends, figure out what you want to do for the rest of your life, and make memories you’ll never forget.
So, if you’re staying home during spring break and don’t have any plans, then that’s great. If you're going on a nice vacation with your family, that's awesome. If spring breaking in Florida with your frats and sororities is what you're doing, that's cool, too. But like I said, you don’t have to post a million bikini pictures to prove that you’re having a good spring break...that can get pretty excessive. Just enjoy your one-week break from your college duties, no matter what your plans are.
