Spring break is the time most looked forward to in the school year. It means vacation, going home, going to the beach and maybe going on some form of adventure. At least, that’s what it’s supposed to mean. People forget that teachers give homework for spring break, and not often a light load. So with that in mind, what does spring break really look like?
1. Sleep.
Sleep becomes that ex that you can’t get away from. You know the one that gets away and comes back looking 1000x hotter? That one, the one that keeps pulling you in and doesn’t let you go without feeling like you need more and more and after it’s finally over you’d rather have a hangover worthy of another movie. Yet, even after that you go back for more. Why? Because for the past two months you’ve run yourself ragged with homework, sports, band, work, whatever you have going on at school. So when the sweet release of sleep comes calling you fall willingly into its arms, and have to be dragged out of it with the Jaws of Life.
2. Food.
Food becomes the other vice in life, after weeks of cafeteria food you eat anything and everything that isn’t nailed down. Leftover spaghetti? Gone. Sandwiches? Eaten. Pot-stickers? Stuck in your stomach. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never liked the food before, if it’s not being served by someone in a hairnet it’s on your plate. Baked goods? Oh my goodness heaven is real! Food becomes the one thing you get out of bed for half the time.
3. Homework.
Homework is a mythical thing that disappears for a while, at least until the day before you go back to school. Then the gates of the underworld open and all of the demons look like the assignments you haven’t done yet. Suddenly those papers look a mile long, and you have to break up with sleep again so you can pull what’s left of your GPA out of the gutter so you can have a decent midterm. All-nighters are again calling your name and Monsters and AMPs and all sorts of caffeine look really good by Saturday night.
Even though we spend all semester looking forward to it, spring break is the worst and best idea ever. The students and teachers all get a break, but if there’s work to be done. Sadly, most of it’s not happening and it just turns into stress for when you get back to school. I’m not saying get rid of spring break, but lightening up in the homework would help. No one wants the break to end, not students, not teachers, certainly not family members that miss those students, so let's give spring break a break.
