Why Sports Journalism Rocks

My career choice is the best.

Why Sports Journalism Rocks
Gracyn Reed

Let's logically think about this. When my teacher told me I could attend sporting events with amazing seats and get paid to talk about the game, I immediately said, "Sign me up!" Honestly, who wouldn't want that job? Sports have always been a passion of mine, and I don't think there could be a better career path for myself. I don't complain about going to classes, because I actually enjoy them, and I don't dread finding a job after college because sports won't go away. They will always need someone to talk to the people watching the broadcast about what's going on—and in Rex Hudler's case, whatever he wants to discuss. I chose to go into sports journalism for many other reasons, but there are some things about the job that you just can't ignore.

1. They let you do whatever you want.

In one game aired on ESPN, the broadcasters ate famous hotdogs from AT&T Park during the Giants game. I mean, seriously? Not only are you getting paid to eat food, but you're getting paid to watch the game. Sometimes they even let you dress up like the fans that day.

2. Baseball boys.

Let's face it, there is nothing better than getting paid to intensely watch a baseball game for the entire season.

3. Player interviews.

In all sports, someone from one, if not both, of the teams will be interviewed. They'll be asked questions about strategy, performance, and expectations. I can't wait for the day that I'm holding that mic asking the questions.

4. You're on TV.

I could say this isn't the top reason I chose this career path, but I might be lying.

5. Field privileges.

Being at an NFL game is nothing like being at an NFL game four hours before it starts with a media pass so you can be on the field.

6. Media pass.

A media pass basically says you're a celebrity. Not only do you get up close with the players, but you also get the best parking spots.

7. People know you.

Everywhere you go, people will be like, "OMG! You're that girl on TV for the Royals. That's awesome!" Or something like that.

8. Free meals.

Nothing makes me happier than free food. Nothing. Honestly, if you catch me denying free food, it's probably because you offered me something with mushrooms in it.

9. Sports is my one true love.

Who needs a significant other when you have things like Brett Eibener and Colin Kapernick in tight pants. And I get field privileges for that? Yeah, I do.

10. Talking is easy.

Why would anyone ever sign up for a job when you won't ever get to talk? Not me, that's for sure.

11. The paycheck.

It shouldn't be the most important thing in a career choice, but it is.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
