As summer approaches, we all hit the streets and fill out application after application trying to find a well-paying summer job. I couldn't even tell you how many applications I filled out. Somehow I ended up back at the job I had two years ago coaching Lil Kickers (soccer for kids 18 months – 9 years old) and working the summer camps offered at the indoor sports center. At first I was hesitant, but eventually '"bit the bullet", as they say, and called asking if they needed people. I received a call back from my excited old boss asking if I could start the next day.
Working with kids gives you a break from the real world, in my opinion. The biggest worry for them is someone stealing their favorite ball. They aren't thinking about college tuition, friends, money or anything else "adult-like" they just want to know when it's snack time and if they can have a Rice Krispy treat. They constantly reminded me of the simple things in life.
As a collegiate soccer player, sometimes you get so lost in the training and pressure of preseason that it can become easy to forget the love and passion you have for the game. That was before my job became making little kids fall in love with the same sport I love. Often I caught myself seeing a younger me in the little kids at camp in Lil Kickers class. It reminded me what made me fall in love with soccer, and why I have continued to play.
Working camp has given me the opportunity to not only bring myself back to the basics of soccer, but it's also forced me to challenge myself to make the simple things fun.
Aside from the pure joy little kids have the ability to bring into your day, your co-coaches and people helping you with camp are some of the best people you will meet. You have an opportunity to get to know them more than anywhere else you will work. Plus, chances are they are in the same boat as you––in college, looking for a job, loving kids and having a passion for soccer.
Through coaching and camps, I have made connections that I couldn't have ever thought of. Talking to kids' parents helps you create connections in the real world that could help you more than you would ever think. This experience has helped me rediscover myself and my deep-rooted love for soccer. I've met incredible kids and amazing coworkers that have turned into great friends, while often forgetting that I am actually getting payed to play games and hang out.
Happy kids at camp.
Summer camp is a "basic" summer job, but it's one that I really encourage everyone to take part in. Plus, who doesn't want an excuse to take crazy, silly-face pictures and literally get paid to channel your inner child again.
