The process of writing music is a strange and beautiful process. Someone's simple thoughts and feelings can turn into an anthem for thousands of people. But how do songs get written?
Songs get written in many different ways, there is no one correct way to write a song. Common ways would be starting with the words, then adding chords to accompany them, or starting with a chord progression then adding words that feel right. All of these ways stem from some sort of inspiration, and songwriters can find that inspiration everywhere.
Some songs are written from life experiences, such as love or loss. But not all stem from deep internal battles or emotion, some just come from random everyday moments. For example, The Beatles' "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" was inspired by John Lennon's son, Julian, who drew a picture depicting his classmate Lucy in a "sky with diamonds" and John immediately wrote a song about it. Another example is from the band, Dire Straits. The lead singer and songwriter, Mark Knopfler, got inspiration for "Money For Nothing" by eavesdropping on two employees at an appliance store.
Artists are always trying to draw inspiration for their music from new ideas, and in order to do so they write often. Not all are hits, but the ones that do end up going on albums go through a lot of editing and production to be up to par. Without looking for song inspiration in weird places, some classic hits would not come to be. Not all songs stem from obvious emotions, and that's what makes them stand out. Songwriting is a process that takes time, effort, and definitely patience, but it is a skill that can be honed and a fun outlet for creativity to flow.
