Southern Illinois University of Carbondale Illinois is known for their traditional drinking holidays and wild partying. What many people don't know of are the endless amount of outdoor adventures available right down the road. Shawnee National Forest totals the amount of 286,400 acres of land across the southern tip of Illinois consisting of trails, camping, lakes and cliff jumping.
1. Giant City State Park
One of the most known places for students to visit is Giant City. Since 1927 Illinois has dedicated 1,100 acres to Giant City State Park. Giant City offers numerous hiking trails, camping, fishing, hunting, rock climbing and even equestrian trails.
2. Kinkaid Lake
If you're feeling extra adventurous, Kinkaid Lake is the place for you. Located in Murphysboro, Illinois the lake that encompasses 2,750 acres of land, gives people endless amounts of options for fun. Offering things such as camping and hiking, Kinkaid Lake is well known for two things in particular. "The Spillway" is at one end of the lake and gives people a beautiful scenery of rushing waves down the waterfall to experience while sitting at the bottom where fishing and picnicking are available. The lake also offers the rush of adrenaline for the people out there looking for a thrill. After about a 25-30 minute walk through the beautiful trees and wildlife, the cliff jumping begins.
3. Campus Lake
As an incoming freshman to the school a lot of times transportation is an issue, especially to get out to the trials and lakes. Look no further than outside your window, SIU campus offers the outdoor experience you're looking for. Not only is there a trail extending the perimeter of the lake with obstacles throughout but a dock with kayaks and canoes available to rent.
