As we get closer to the end of August, and back to the start of a new semester at the University of Kentucky, one thing rests in the back of our minds. Right next to tailgates and the upcoming basketball season, Keeneland, located right in the heart of Lexington, the horse capital of the world, is just one of the many things that make Kentucky and UK so special.
Make sure you get out to Keeneland to spend some quality time in the bluegrass during these upcoming fall races. These are five reasons to look forward to the opening of the fall meet.
1. The horses, of course.
What better way to spend a gorgeous day in Kentucky than out on the track admiring these beautiful horses. But these aren't just any other horses. Thoroughbreds, known for their stamina, speed, and spirit, show the athleticism comparable to our UK basketball team. And it is tough not to fall in love with them when you are surrounded by the excitement these horses bring on the track.
2. It's fall in Kentucky.
Obviously, fall in Kentucky is absolutely breathtaking. No one can argue that.
3. The Keeneland dress code.
If you live below the Mason-Dixon line, chances are you have probably seen Southern Proper’s trademark T-shirt proudly displaying the “Keeneland Dress Code.” Fashion is all part of the game when it comes to Keeneland. Whether it be cute sundresses or your finest sport coat, even celebrities have been know to be strutting their stuff around Keeneland in their southern style.
4. College Scholarship Day.
One of the best things about Keeneland is their support to college students shown through College Scholarship Day. College Scholarship Day sure makes its mark on your calendar as you rush for free admission, T-shirts and koozies and even a chance at some of the generous scholarships that students are eligible for through a draw.
5. The Breeders’ Cup.
As if the fall races at Keeneland weren’t exciting before, this fall will be even more exciting with The Breeders’ Cup dates being set for Oct. 30 and Oct. 31. I know we all just can’t wait to watch American Pharaoh race in what will hopefully be what they’re calling a Grand Slam after his last races that led to him winning the title as a Triple Crown Winner.
So, if you are heading to Kentucky this fall and looking for another reason to race back to the blue grass state and this beautiful campus we call home, Kenneland is it. I can’t wait to see you all back at the track, and go CATS!
