Opening our ears to what music has to offer.

Sound For The Ages

"One man's trash is another man's treasure" is a phrase usually not associated with music choice however it is a true statement. Many music listeners would say they have a balanced music choice where they dabble in each genre because of a specific artist or song. Music appreciation is based on perspective, what may be moving to one person could have no emotional weighing on someone else. Music is all about perspective and what you make it out to be. So, can one call another's music choice "trash" if they don't like that genre or artist? Yes, but everybody has an opinion.

I pride myself on my music choice for its expansiveness and openness to new sounds and style. From country to metal there is something for everyone to enjoy in my play list. This appreciation for all genre types has allowed me to connect with many different types of people. Music is a conversation starter with anyone because it encompasses so much of our day. You cannot go a day without hearing some form of music. Whether it be a commercial, your car, or many other places, music follows.

Many close themselves off to whole genres because of social pressures or because they don't want to try something new, but what if we all were more accepting of this new experience? What if we tried something new on the ears? Stepping outside of your "musical comfort zone" is what I am saying. Listening to that one song you always skip or trying out that new band your friend keeps pestering you about. I am not saying that it will work out very time and you will enjoy the music, but it is all about trial and error. In the end that is how you find music you like, by trying it out and seeing if you like it.

I am understanding and rational enough to agree that not all music is good there are duds even from the bet artists. Some songs fall flat and are uninspired while others should not have been made all together. This however should not be grounds to call an artist "trash" because what they make is their art and can be appreciated by someone. Artists put a lot of effort into getting studio time and to produce the music. It may not be good but empathizing with them and respecting their talents is how the industry becomes better. Constructive criticism is always the route to go.

Music has a wide variety of genres and artists to discover and enjoy. As listeners we must be open to what it is trying to tell us and where it wants to take us. Being open to it makes listening more pleasurable.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
