Sorority recruitment is all sorts of things. It’s overwhelming, view changing, exhilarating, nerve wracking, exciting, and unlike anything ever experienced. This is my first year on the other side of recruitment and it’s been amazing and crazy all in one. Here’s a glimpse into the weeks of recruitment and finding the girls that will help further the beauty of your sorority.
1. Roll call at 6 am
Back to the good ole days of waking up early like in high school. 6 am may not seem early but when you have to be dressed up, makeup, hair, and all, the alarm going off at 4 am is terrifying.
2. Sisterhood Activities
Because suddenly humping each other to pop balloons bonds us.
3. Standing in line for your very first round
This is happening. THIS IS HAPPENING. We’ve been preparing for this moment for months and 2 seconds before go-time your mind blanks.
4. Having to smile for what feels like years
“Smile ladies!” “Be sure to smile!” “SMILE!”
5. Being tired is a disease and it's amongst us
Refer to #1 as to why being tired becomes a part of the life of a sorority girl in recruitment.
6. After talking for 5 rounds straight
Your voice slowly turns into a mans and water becomes a delicacy.
7. When you know you met your little
This girl is literally your soulmate and you could not be happier that you found her so easily. There’s a lot of “me too” and “omg same” involved in this process.
8. Talking to so many girls can be a strain on the brain
“Ohhhh! You’re from Florida right? One of my friends is from Florida! ... you're not from Florida are you?” and then of course there’s the awkward silence after completely skewing the origin of this poor girl.
9. Positivity can be hard
No explanation necessary.
10. Coming back after a great round
“She’s totally a/an (whatever you are)!” You just killed it out there! Way to go you, dance your little heart out after that killer round.
11. A girl who doesn't know how to elaborate on her answer
The worst thing imaginable. You’ve asked her every question regarding the day and her and now have to refer to “What’s your spirit animal?” and telling her random stories. Hint: #12.
12. When you run out of things to talk about
Yup, this will FOR SURE happen to you. Leading to #13.
13. When you just dig a deeper hole into a conversation
Congratulations. You’ve just dug a hole and continue to. And now you can't even speak correctly.
14. Having to recover from a from a not so good round
Sure, it’s rough but you can do it. Walk this one off champ.
15. Hearing "I love her! She's so sweet!" about a hundred times a day
Well news flash, a lot of girls are sweet and lovable. Maybe consider looking at a thesaurus.
16. Running late to the line-up
There’s 15 seconds before the doors open and the whole house is shouting your name. And where are you? Relieving yourself in the basement bathroom.
17. Selling you sisterhood
Basically speaks for itself.
18. The moment when roll call gets moved to 8 am
There’s nothing sweeter than the gift of sleep.
19. Introducing yourself
You have a name tag, but why not show these girls your alter ego.
20. Picking up the wrong PNM
Oh now you messed up.
21. Saying hi to your rush crush who's talking to another recruiter
100% accurate facial expressions.
22. Nap and rally
Round off? Take that nap girl. In the hallway. On the floor. With people stepping on you. Then get up in approximately 35 minutes and talk till you go numb.
23. Recruitment as a whole
Recruitment is a very stressful time for not only the recruiters but also the PNM’s. They are choosing their new home and sisters.
24. Finally reaching bid day
YESSSS! You’ve crossed the finish line and all your hard work has paid off. “Hi! Welcome to ____! Now let’s go sleep”.
25. Being able to share the whole experience with your amazing sisters
Sure, recruitment is tough and can be incredibly tiring, but sharing those moments with your sisters is irreplaceable.
My sisters are my best friends and the memories we made through spirit week and recruitment will always be close to my heart. Joining Kappa Delta changed my life for the better and my sisters continue to bless it everyday. So, yes, recruitment is lots of things but I wouldn't change it for the world because with my sisters by my sides, anything is possible.
