Songfest: It's Showtime

For the past 3 months, 26 campus organizations  have practiced jazz hands and formation changes in preparation for the 36th annual Songfest. This year, the money raised at Songfest will benefit 25 philanthropies around the world.

For the 36th consecutive year, Chi Omega Sorority at Texas A&M University will host the largest Greek-sponsored philanthropic event on campus. Songfest is a variety show and competition featuring multiple student organizations. Each year’s production is unique, with participating groups showcasing their talents through music, dance, and skit performances in a two-night event November 21 and 22.

Each act chose a theme for their performance, and have been practicing for hours, multiple nights a week since early September. Typically, each act will include two to three group dances, an all womens' dance and the crowd pleaser, all mens' dance.

The acts are scored based on entertainment value, theme development, creativity, choreography, t-shirt sales and points earned in the social media contest. This year's judges include Kenny Hill, Drew Kazer, Jordan Johnson and Northern National.

In the past years, acts with breathtaking lifts and imaginative themes have captivated the audience and judges. This year, the competition is tight and the acts are fired up about taking home the biggest check for their philanthropy.

There will be first, second and third place winners who will receive between $1,000 to $3,000 prizes to donate to their philanthropy. All other participating acts will take home money for their philanthropy.

The heartbeat behind Songfest is the 25 philanthropies that are benefitted from the money raised. Last year, Songfest raised over $124,000 dollars and donated $96,000.

With the money raised through Songfest, Chi-O is able to sponsor a Make a Wish child in the local area. This year Chi-O is sponsoring a girl named Gillian and sending her to Disney World.

Chi-O's local philanthropy is Still Creek Ranch - a school and home for children rescued out of crisis situations. Girls who live at Still Creek are paired with one to two Chi-O "mentors" who visit the girls weekly and build relationships with them.

This mentorship program allows Chi O to be hands on with their philanthropy. "We don't just send our money off somewhere - we get to see the funds we donate being used to bring new life to these girls," said Chi O's Still Creek coordinator Katy Cooney.

Songfest is the largest student run event on campus and raises more money than any other greek fundraiser. Buy your tickets now at MSC Box Office and be a part of this event that changes lives in our local community, and on an international scale.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
