In case you are one of those people who are debating about whether or not to leave the country come November, I want to reassure you with a few facts about our potential president.
Many of you may already know this but I want to remind you anyway that our president does not actually posses much power.
I know, whew.
The president can present problems directly to his or her people, suggest new laws, lead his or her political party, and nominate cabinet members and other high officials, to name a few. But here's what he or she CAN'T do:
No Can Do
A president, or our future Trump or Clinton, CANNOT:
1. Make laws
2. Interpret them
3. Decide how federal money will be spent
4. Choose Cabinet members or Supreme Court Justices without Senate approval
5. Declare War
The Trouble With Tax Reforms
Trump's trickle down economics and Clinton's charge the rich are also major concerns for voters. Americans seem to care most what a candidate promises to do for the economy, so if you're worried about one or both of the future economic plans just remember that tax reforms, especially drastic ones, are extremely difficult to pass.
The president cannot actually impose tax reforms. He or she can suggest them but congress ultimately makes the decision. If history tells us anything, congress will make changes but those changes will be small changes that happen over time, and never drastic ones.
That being said, you won't see a government run by Trump that imposes taxes on the rich. He will influence what he wants done but again, there won't be any major changes at least for a good amount of time.
If I just ruined your high hopes for certain tax promises made by these candidates I apologize, but Trump and Clinton were way ahead of me on the disappointment aspect of these elections.
Mission Impossible
The last thing to remember is that presidents really only manage to get a few things done during their reign. In all of 8 years, Obama's major accomplishments included eliminating Osama bin Laden, ending the War in Iraq, relaxing tensions with Cuba, and creating a booming drug business. Oh, sorry I mean Obamacare.
It's extremely difficult to get major and nationally effective things done as president, which means Trump and Clinton given (hopefully) only four years will not really manage to make too many major changes for the U.S. anyway.
