Society Does Not Determine You

Be you, and not who society wants you to be.

Society Does Not Determine You
Mackenzie Webb

So often, and even more today than ever, we are letting society and those around us determine way too many things for us. We let those people around us decide what is "cool" and "trendy", but why can't everything be "cool" and "trendy" to different people for various reasons? Letting society choose these things for us, also lets them more easily place their (usually) harsh judgment on those who do not follow the latest trends set by society. Not only can we talk about trends such as clothes and such, but also society determines how someone should look physically. This can include always having your hair done, having a full face of makeup, or even having your nails professionally done 100 percent of the time.

Yes, some of you may beg to differ that we don't have to listen or do what society wants/expects. And that is correct, we are all our own people and we can make our own decisions. But that may come with "consequences" if you will, by going against what society expects of us. Every time we walk out of our house, we should not be worried about how others might see or judge us if we don't look as we should.

Society's expectations can be the top reason for people having many body image issues with themselves. They may see a size 00 model with long blonde hair, and perfectly done makeup and think that is what they are expected to look like. This is where many issues can come in. Each person is made wonderfully and beautifully by God himself, piece by piece. Therefore with that said, not every person can look like that model in some magazine that is viewed by the world.

This point can go as far as to judge someone by the music they listen to, or even the car they drive. The real point of this week's article is to make people aware that we continue to let society make decisions for us for no reason. And yet we still complain about being judged, or not being in trend with others, but we are the ones who encourage society to act as one in situations such as this.

All in all, I write this article to tell those out there who are afraid to be their own person, DON'T BE. Be your own person, and be who you want to be. People may say things about you, or to you, but as long as you're comfortable with who you are, and the choices you make, then don't let anyone stop you.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
