As Netflix's new original series entitled 13 Reasons Why has stated, "Facebook, Twitter, [and] Instragram [has] made us a society of stalkers... and we love it."
Whether you just browse Facebook once a month to see how your family is doing, or you're an Insta-holic where you feel the need to post and catch up every 14 minutes, you've fallen under the spell of social media. In fact we, as social media users, have become so accustomed to social media that most of us may not even realize it. Think about it... have you ever posted about your current activities? Or the food you just ate that tasted amazing? What about how your manager is driving you up a wall and you just need more coffee to make it through the day or else you might die? Granted, a lot of things you share on social media can be extremely significant. Like how you just got engaged, which college you'll be attending in the fall, when you're due to have your baby, etcetera.. etcetera. But the fact is that a lot of what we post about our lives on a day-to-day basis is irrelevant to others. No need to deny it, we're all friends here. Especially because the majority of you all are probably viewing this article from one of the social medias listed above. The point here is that you're following what others do while they follow you, but not many think about it in a negative, completely creepy way, so we love it. People love the attention.
But fear not my fellow social media fanatics, for it is never too late to change. Or maybe you don't want to change and you're perfectly fine with the amount of time you spend on social media. Nevertheless, we can learn to limit how much we view and post on Facebook, Twitter, etc. by simply putting our phones down! Now that spring is here and summer will soon be upon us, we have the perfect opportunities to do something that most social media-holics have not done in ages- go outside! Leave your phone inside. Go mow your lawn. Take your siblings to the neighborhood park. Have a barbeque. Take your dog for a walk. There are so many things you can do by utilizing the great outdoors! If you've somehow managed to turn down all of those ideas because of your allergy to sunlight, don't worry, I have more that don't require you to be outside. Read a book. Bake a cake. Learn how to do something you've always wanted to do. Just please, for the sake of all things aside from the internet, put your phone down, shut down the computer, and go experience the world without the use of an illuminated screen.
