So You're Thinking Of Joining A Sorority?

Congratulations on making one of the best decisions of your life. You are about to entire into a world unlike any other, while gaining 100+ new friends who are about to become your sisters. You are about to join something bigger than yourself.

I joined my sorority as a freshman, and may I encourage you to do the same? As a very small student in a ridiculously big school, I was looking for a way to make connections. I wanted to make an impact. With such a big community of students, I was looking for a way to make it smaller. I wanted to make this school my home away from home.

I did my research and I met every sister under the Panhellenic sun until I was sure that Greek life was the life for me. Now, believe me when I say that going through recruitment is actually not as scary as it seems. Formal recruitment is the time where you find your home. It's the time where you get to decide where you want to pledge your utmost dedication and devotion to their letters, ideals, and values. It's going to be one of the most nerve-racking and trying experiences of your life. But one thing is for sure: I would do it all again in a heartbeat.

As I sit on my bed surrounded by monograms and Lilly Pulitzer crafts, I realize just how bare my walls and my life would be without my sisters. With only one full semester as an initiated sister under my belt, I have already been exposed to experiences I could only ever dream of having. I have met amazing people and accomplished amazing things all because I have had my sisters by my side. I thank them for continuously shaping me into the bright, successful young woman I am and plan to become.

If you’re thinking about rushing just because you could use a few more extra likes on Instagram or because you’re almost at 800 Twitter followers, think again. Believe it or not, sorority life isn’t always filled with candid pictures and videos of girls blowing glitter out of their hands. Sorority life is about being part of something bigger than yourself. It's about putting aside your individual needs to better your chapter and the community as a whole. It's about dedicating yourself to an inspiring group of women who will become your best friends, support systems, and sisters.

If you are even thinking about rushing a sorority, all I can say is to go for it. There is nothing to lose. Participate in formal recruitment to realize all of the possibilities that lie ahead. Rush this semester to find your home. Rush this semester to become the best version of yourself.

Joining a sorority changed my life. I've finally been given the opportunity to give back to a community that has given so much to me. I’ve found my home in a group of strong, powerful, independent women who continue to show me the true meaning of sisterhood and womanhood. Every day I’m working hard toward a brighter future, and there is nothing more reassuring than knowing that there is an army of bright young women standing behind me, pushing me along the pathway to more success.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
