When I was growing up, I'd been asked some pretty ridiculous questions. It mostly happened during middle school and high school, but I still get asked occasionally. I think back on some of these questions and laugh because of how absurd and stupid they were. Here are 11 questions that I have been asked because of my race:
1. Do you speak Chinese?
I was adopted at 13 months, so no, sorry to disappoint you. I wish.
2. So, do you eat cats?
3. "Wong-ching-chang-chong," what did I just say?
4. Could you open your eyes/Are your eyes open?
Yes, my eyes are open, and I can clearly see your ignorance.
5. How did you get so tan?!
6. *points to Asian person* Do you know them?
Totally. Every single Asian person and I have this special connection. You wouldn't understand.
7. Do you say "Pepsi" like the Asian people at ABC Buffet?
No.
8. Oh, are you a foreign exchange student??
9. Do you love rice?
10. So what are you?
What do I look like? I'm a human being, a young lady, and an American.
And my personal favorite question:
11. Are you Asian or Chinese?
I'm actually both. We're pretty rare.
