A Cure for the Body Image Blues

Everyone knows the feeling.

You're too fat.

You're too skinny.

You're so muscular.

You're so scrawny.

You have such a Dad Bod.

Looks like someone skipped leg day.

Your eyebrows are so not on fleek.

You're going to wear that?

Why do you say that?

You should try wearing makeup sometime.

You wear way too much makeup.

No one cares.

Men and women experience words and comments like these every single day. Whether you're saying it to yourself or someone is saying it to you, our insecurities and perceptions of others can make us feel like we'll never be good enough for the world around us. Yes, people's opinions shouldn't influence our behavior, and we shouldn't compare ourselves to others, but if we're all being honest here, it can be hard to ignore the biting feeling you have when you see the guy in the gym squatting more than you can, or the gorgeous girl skateboarding down the road with the perfect hair, body, and makeup.

Seeing these people, you might think, Why can't I be like that?, or Gosh, must be nice to look like that.

But let's face it: you aren't perfect. You never will be, and neither will those people that you envy. No one ever will be! Because we are naturally flawed due to our human nature.

However, even though it's been said and done hundreds of times, I'm here to remind you that you; yes you...

You are amazing.

Whether you're into fitness or not, you deserve to be happy in your own skin. Even if you consider yourself 'a work in progress', don't give up, and don't put yourself down when you fall. Learn to embrace every trial and remember that Rome, just like your body, wasn't built in a day, so you need to love yourself and inspire yourself no matter how you look, and these quotes can help you get there.

For when your physical appearance gets you down:

" Exercise because you love your body, not because you hate it."
-Anonymous
"I definitely have body issues, but everybody does. When you come to the realization that everybody does that – even the people that I consider flawless – then you can start to live with the way you are. I've read interviews with some of the most beautiful women who have insecurities. And you look at them and you're like “How do you have? Name one thing wrong with yourself”, and they could name a handful."
-Taylor Swift
"I am allowed to look sexy, feel sexy, and be in love. I am worthy of all of those things, and so are you."
-Mary Lambert

"Happiness isn't size specific"
-Anna Guest-Jelley

"How much time have I wasted on diets and what I look like? Take your time and your talent and figure out what you have to contribute to this world. And get over what the hell your butt looks like in those jeans!"
-America Ferreira

“Now every girl is expected to have Caucasian blue eyes, full Spanish lips, a classic button nose, hairless Asian skin with a California tan, a Jamaican dance hall ass, long Swedish legs, small Japanese feet, the abs of a lesbian gym owner, the hips of a nine-year-old boy, the arms of Michelle Obama, and doll tits. The person closest to actually achieving this look is Kim Kardashian, who, as we know, was made by Russian scientists to sabotage our athletes.”
-Tina Fey

"We all have our imperfections. But I'm human, and you know, it's important to concentrate on other qualities besides outer beauty."
-Beyonce Knowles

For when your confidence is lacking:

"How I feel about myself is more important that how I look. Feeling confident, being comfortable in your own skin- that's what really makes you beautiful."
-Bobbi Brown
“Success is usually the culmination of controlling failure.”
-Sylvester Stallone

“You dream. You plan. You reach. There will be obstacles. There will be doubters. There will be mistakes. But with hard work, with belief, with confidence and trust in yourself and those around you, there are no limits.”
-Michael Phelps

"To lose confidence in one's body, is to lose confidence in oneself"
-Simone de Beauvoir

“You are not a mistake. You are not a problem to be solved. But you won't discover this until you are willing to stop banging your head against the wall of shaming and caging and fearing yourself"
- Geneen Roth

“We must appreciate and never underestimate our own inner power.”
-Noah Galloway

“You are imperfect, permanently and inevitably flawed. And you are beautiful.”
-Amy Bloom

So embrace yourself.

“I am a hot-blooded fire and I am fearless."
-Amy Schumer

Smile.

“You're only human. You live once and life is wonderful so eat the damn red velvet cupcake!”
-Emma Stone

Because you. Are. Wonderful.

“If you retain nothing else, always remember the most important rule of beauty, which is: who cares?"
-Tina Fey

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
