Yes, I get it. I smile a lot, I’m “nice to everyone”, I like pink. Well… I like pink and leopard print and sparkles and lace and dresses- in short, I’m girly. I’ll give you that. I’ll stop in the middle of crowded Times Square to pet a stranger’s dog and I still call my mother “mommy”. I’m 20, I still sleep with a stuffed animal, and I’m the type of person to hug you if you’re crying.
Yeah, it’s true. I’m cuddly, I’m fun- sized, I’m only 4’ 11”(actually 4’10” & ¾, but who’s counting?). I like bubble baths and scented candles, flowers on dates and a good sunset by the seashore. I’m your stereotypical adorable little girl.
BUT
I’m also incredibly strong- willed. Once I know what I want, I go for it rigorously and without ceasing. Eyes on the prize, no matter the circumstance. I’ll bust my butt to achieve my goals and raise hell if that’s how I need to do it. Don’t be fooled- I’m small, but the impact I make is anything but.
I hate it. I hate the cooing and codling and talking down- I’m down here but I’m not beneath you. I’m nobody’s stepping stone but my own. I can’t reach the top shelf, but if you’re not careful I’ll be at the top before you know it. I’m small, more sly than a fox, and cunning to boot. I’m sugary sweet, but at times I hate, I hate it when you treat me less- than.
There’s so much. There’s so much bottled up inside of little old me, I’m like a firecracker ready to burst. Ready to burst with knowledge, with potential, with innovation, with opinions, with questions and answers.
I know. I know who I am. I know what I am, and what I’m not.
What am I? I’m everything you could ever imagine. I can rise to any occasion, no matter my stature. My height makes no difference when my mind holds so much. I’m young, seeing the world through rose-colored glasses. After all, I like anything pink.
But maybe that’s not so bad. Maybe it isn’t so bad to be the shimmery pink glow in a grey world, ready to explode into the sky a mix of red and white- passion and pure intentions. Who doesn’t need a little more love in their life?
I can give. I can give love and so much more. I can give you the conjugation of a verb in three different languages. I can give you a 10-page paper in less than three days. But maybe I can’t give you help in math. Scratch that, I definitely can’t give you help in math.
In the end- it honestly won’t matter how tall I was or how I dressed or how many bows I put in my hair. What matters is how big you are on the inside, not so much how small you are on the outside.
